Netflix’s Bridgerton hasn’t been out for a month yet, but it’s young stars are already some of the most searched for actors in the world. At the center of the Regency era show is actress Phoebe Dynevor. She and her co-star (Regé-Jean Page) are quickly becoming famous for their sex scenes in the steamy series. Curiosity about the stars has viewers running to their IMDB pages, which has shot the actors to the top of the IMDB Star Meter. Those unfamiliar with both Phoebe Dynevor and Bridgerton have a lot of questions about what this is all about, so let’s get into it.
Phoebe Dynevor is playing the oldest daughter of the Bridgerton family in the Regency era in England. The first season of the show is eight episodes long and follows the love story between Dyvnevor’s character, Daphne Bridgerton, and Regé-Jean Page’s Simon Basset. The show is from the production company Shondaland. It’s the first series to come from the deal Shonda Rhimes made with Netflix. The showrunner is Chris Van Dusen, and the story is based on the first of the series of novels by Julia Quinn. While the show first picked up controversy for its Black characters, it’s quickly gained more notoriety for its steamy sex scenes.
When NPR reviewed the show, they wrote that it was, “tempting to review Bridgerton thusly: ‘I highly recommend this Shondaland series, which will remind you a little of Jane Austen and a little of Scandal, and which prompted me to specifically decline to seek out the precise definition of an orgy’.”
Unless you’re heavily into historical television series, you likely haven’t seen Phoebe Dynevor before. She’s only just beginning to do interviews for the new series. The young actress was born in Manchester in 1995. Her mother is a soap opera star. Her father is an actor and screenwriter. She grew up around stories and was particularly in love with the historical ones. Moreover, she always wanted to be in one set in the Regency era. It was exciting, then, when her biggest role yet came from Bridgerton. Getting the role happened fast for her. In early 2019, she met with the producer and showrunner. Soon, she was flown to Los Angeles to meet with Shonda Rhimes herself. The next day, she got the call. The part was hers.
From there, Phoebe Dynevor was signed up for etiquette classes and horse riding lessons. While Dynevor had been on historical sets before, the Shondaland production was a whole other experience. Everything was handled with a lot more care and attention to detail. Even the intimacy scenes were different. The pair had an intimacy coordinator on set. Details were noted so that blocking for the scenes was arranged ahead of time. There was no room for a director to surprise the actors with new takes. Phoebe Dynevor said she knew exactly where Regé-Jean Page’s hand would go at any given moment. She said the experience was a lot like filming stunt scenes.
Perhaps there’s something to all the forethought, planning, and extra care that helped pull the steamy scenes off for the show because they definitely worked and definitely got people curious. IMDB’s Star Meter ranks above the hundreds of millions of profiles on their site by pageview. Since the release of Bridgerton, people have been looking up Phoebe Dynevor and her co-star Regé-Jean Page more than Gal Gadot, who just saw the release of Wonder Woman, or Anya-Taylor Joy, who also rose to fame this year on the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit.
While Bridgerton wasn’t one of the most popular shows for Netflix in 2020, that may only be because the series was released on Christmas Day. The streaming network is cagey about releasing statistics but does sometimes tell us their numbers for the first 28 days of a new release. Currently, they are projecting Bridgerton will stream in 63 million households in its first 28 days. This may put the series as one of the top-performing series ever for Netflix. We don’t yet know whether the series will get a second season. If it does, the love story for Phoebe Dynevor’s character is unlikely to take center stage. The eight episodes told the complete story. This could mean fewer steamy scenes between the pair in season two, but if you’ve seen a Shondaland production before, there’s some faith to be held that the writers will find a way.
