Peri Gilpin Returns As Roz In Frasier Reboot

Peri Gilpin will reprise her role as Roz for the upcoming Frasier reboot.

If you heard that the blues were calling tossed salad and scrambled eggs, it’s because Frasier has re-entered the building. And not only will Kelsey Grammar reprise his titular role for the upcoming reboot, but it has also been confirmed that Peri Gilpin, better known as Roz Doyle, will be making an appearance on the upcoming Frasier reboot series on Paramount+, according to Deadline.

Though the 2004 series finale sees Roz becoming station manager of Seattle’s KACL talk-radio station, the new series will take place in Frasier’s original Cheers setting of Boston, Massachusetts.

In addition to Peri Gilpin rejoining the Frasier cast, we’re also going to be graced with the presence of Bebe Neuwirth, who portrayed Frasier’s ex-wife, and mother of his only son, Freddy, who will be played by Jack Cutmore-Scott. At this point in time, however, we’re not exactly sure what role Roz will have in the new series. It’s been almost 20 years since Frasier concluded its 11-season run on NBC, so a lot of time has passed for every character involved, and the plot is still very much under wraps.

What we do know is that Peri Gilpin’s presence will only make the Frasier reboot stronger. It’s an unfortunate reality that David Hyde Pierce will not be returning to reprise his role of Niles Crane, Frasier’s brother. And it’s even more unfortunate that we will not see the likes of Marty Crane (or his chair), Frasier’s retired cop father, because of John Mahoney’s passing in 2018.

For those of you who are avid Frasier fans, you know how instrumental Marty and Niles were in giving Frasier the reality checks he often needed throughout the series. But with this news of Peri Gilpin appearing in the Frasier reboot in some capacity, she may be the foil that we need to keep Frasier on the straight and narrow. And we’re just speculating here, but Frasier and Roz always kind of had a thing for each other, though this aspect of their relationship was never fully explored in the original series.

Okay, so it was explored a little bit but left open-ended.

Whether Peri Gilpin’s Roz Doyle is still living in Seattle or also living in Boston at this point in the Frasier timeline is a mystery that has yet to be uncovered. What we do know is that a central source of conflict will involve Frasier’s strained relationship with his now grown-up son, Frederick. The source of tension comes from Frederick dropping out of college to pursue a career as a fireman rather than a psychiatrist, against Frasier’s wishes.

Frederick may be regretting his decision to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps by pursuing a career in the public sector, and we may see a little bit of Marty’s blunt and decisive personality manifest in Frasier’s son. Though we’re speculating, we may see Peri Gilpin’s Roz being the voice of reason as Frasier and Frederick try to mend their fractured relationship as father and son. Whether this is in the form of an intimate phone call to an old friend back in Seattle, or an in-person encounter, we’re sure that Frasier and Roz have kept in touch over the years.

Though no official release date has been announced, sources say the Frasier reboot is due to air on Paramount+ in mid-2023.
