Michael Keaton is returning as Batman in The Flash. We could not believe this when the news originally dropped but the stars have aligned and the once and future Caped Crusader will be back on the big screen as the Dark Knight. Fans have been eagerly anticipating his comeback and part of that has been getting excited about just what he will look like when dons the cape and cowl for the first time in decades. And now, thanks to The Flash director Andy Muschietti, we have our first official look at what to expect from the classic Batman when he shows up in the film.
The design of this Michael Keaton Batsuit seems to be hearkening back to the one in the excellent Batman Returns more than the original 1989 Batman. That movie famously featured a slightly different interpretation of the Batman logo than what became popular. You can get a look at that suit right here:
And here is Michael Keaton in full display in the Batman Returns suit. You can also notice the more armor-styled abs that show up in this suit as well as the one in the behind-the-scenes picture from The Flash:
Having this confirmation that Michael Keaton will be donning the Batsuit once again has got to be one of the biggest gifts DC fans have gotten in a while. We still are not clear just how prominent a role he will have in the movie, but any appearance by him is going to be received with thunderous applause from longtime Batman fans. We certainly hope he will be featured for a large enough chunk of the movie to rationalize his involvement in the movie. There could be some major disappointment if his appearance is a fairly minor cameo.
We have to imagine that Michael Keaton will not be the only big get for the movie. We know that the movie will feature a new Supergirl as well as some other surprises. This has to do with the fact that The Flash will be integrating the multiverse into its story. We could be seeing any number of new and familiar takes on the DC superhero universe make their way into the movie. There have to be some secrets that the filmmakers are keeping under wraps in order to make a major splash by the time the movie comes out.
Whatever else is in store with The Flash, we now have undeniable confirmation that Michael Keaton will be back and will be strapping into one of the most iconic iterations of the Batsuit ever put to film. That fact alone is reason to be incredibly giddy for The Flash. Hopefully, that will lead to another highly-anticipated fan project, Batman Beyond, finally getting off the ground. Seeing Michael Keaton as the mentor to a new, young Batman would be the cherry on top of his return in The Flash.
