Mel Gibson and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson are teaming up to catch a killer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pair have begun filming their new crime thriller, Boneyard. The film comes from indie producer Colin Bates, one of the names behind the Halle Berry film Kidnap and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s zombie indie Maggie.

Inspired by true events, Boneyard stars Mel Gibson as an FBI special agent tracking down a serial killer dubbed The Bone Collector. Gibson must work alongside the Albuquerque police chief, played by 50 Cent, and an officer portrayed by Joe vs. Carole’s Brian Van Holt. The officer and chief clash amid suspicion that the murderer may be one of the department’s own.

Directing Mel Gibson and 50 Cent in the film is indie filmmaker Asif Akbar, best known for 2022’s Michael Jai White and Mickey Rourke action thriller The Commando. Colin Bates is producing the film alongside the film’s co-writer Vincent McDaniel. Hank Byrd and Koji Steven Sakai wrote the script with Akbar and McDaniel.

Boneyard is the next indie in line for Mel Gibson, who has spent much of the last few years churning out low-budget action and crime fare. He appeared in six films in 2022 alone, including a role alongside Mark Wahlberg in the inspirational tale Father Stu. This year, Gibson will move to streaming TV with his starring role in Peacock’s John Wick spin-off, The Continental.

Set in 1970s New York City, The Continental looks to expand the backstory of Winston, the proprietor of the Continental Hotel, played by Ian McShane in the John Wick films, as he rises to power in the underground world of assassins. Colin Woodell will portray the younger version of Winston opposite Mel Gibson in the three-part miniseries.

The Continental will also elaborate on the lore of the John Wick universe, introducing a host of new characters. Mel Gibson plays a man called Cormac, but few details are known about his role. The series is set to debut on September 22, 2023.

Beyond The Continental, Mel Gibson will star in the Southern noir thriller Desperation Road, the edgy crime thriller Informant, and a coming-of-age mystery fantasy called Boys of Summer. That film follows a group of teens in 1977 who enlist a retired detective to help them stop a supernatural force threatening their town.

Mel Gibson is also rumored to return to his rough-and-tumble role as Riggs in Lethal Weapon 5. The last installment of the Lethal Weapon franchise was released in 1998 and was succeeded by a television reboot in 2016.

50 Cent has been a mainstay on the hit Starz series Power. He also executive produces the series, several spin-offs, and the new Starz show BMF. 50 Cent is set to join Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Megan Fox, Dolph Lundgren, and more in The Expendables 4, due this year.

Mel Gibson has mounted a comeback, extending and evolving his career through years of controversy. Boneyard will serve as yet another entry in the actor’s continued success as he works steadily on indies and blockbusters alike.
