Many film fanatics can surely relate to the star-struck looks of famed actors on the red carpet or tales told on late-night talk shows regarding celebrities meeting their childhood heroes while on the job. One such example, written up courtesy of Deadline, showcases Hannibal‘s Mads Mikkelsen fanning out over legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese.
Taxi Driver Is His Favorite
According to the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny actor’s interview, Mikkelsen blurted out the famous Taxi Driver monologue, in its entirety, to the filmmaker upon meeting him, in a cute but potentially humiliating display of his fandom.
Mads Mikkelsen explained during his interview that Martin Scorsese is far and away his favorite director.
Mads Mikkelsen And Martin Scorcese
While the two have not yet worked together on a major motion picture, Mikkelsen says he’s met the Killers of the Flower Moon filmmaker on several occasions and even exchanged numbers.
During their first meeting, Mikkelsen claims to have approached Scorsese intending to remain silent about his Taxi Driver obsession but eventually folded to pressure after having a few too many drinks.
Learned Taxi Driver Speech In His 20s
Mads Mikkelsen, who just turned 58, says that he learned the entire speech from the Martin Scorsese film when he was in his 20s, and the words have remained deep within his memory banks ever since.
In the film, Robert De Niro portrays Travis Bickle, a socially stunted loner suffering from insomnia, which only drives him deeper into his blend of mental illness and exhaustion.
The 1976 crime noir film has long been touted as one of Scorsese’s greatest outings, alongside such cinematic classics as Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
Mads Mikkelsen Admires Scorsese
The topic of Scorsese’s filmography arose after Mads Mikkelsen was prompted about any filmmakers he’d have a specific interest in working with.
The star has not tried to hide his admiration for the prolific 81-year-old director, citing films such as Taxi Driver and seminal works from his early career. Martin Scorsese recently released his 26th feature-length narrative, Killers of the Flower Moon, with no signs of slowing or stopping.
Like Mads Mikkelsen, who worked on a host of foreign films during the recent SAG-AFTRA strike, Martin Scorsese has been hard at work plotting his next several projects.
Killers Of The Flower Moon Is Latest
According to the acclaimed director’s IMDb, Scorsese is currently attached to direct two upcoming feature films, a television special, and a television spinoff of Gangs of New York.
The prolific filmmaker recently appeared in a series of promotional interviews promoting Killers of the Flower Moon. He discussed his longevity, mortality, distance for Marvel films, and desire to keep working.
Mad Mikkelsen Collaborating At Some Point?
While Mads Mikkelsen has yet to appear in a Martin Scorsese epic, the collaboration is surely coming.
As Mikkelsen says, perhaps the impromptu rendition of De Niro’s Taxi Driver speech made him look like a fool, but the filmmaker will surely respect his moxy.
In any case, there’s no telling what the future holds for the creative duo, as many fans worldwide would likely kill to see the inspired collaboration finally come to fruition.
