Everyone has been wondering what Lady Gaga would look like as Harley Quinn in the upcoming DC film Joker: Folie Deux. Now we finally have our best look at the pop star and actor on set as the character. Take a look at her in the Quinn get-up below:

Lady Gaga’s version of Harley Quinn seems a little more subdued than the character we were introduced to in Batman: The Animated Series and that Margot Robbie most recently brought to live-action. We see Gaga’s version with a red blazer and a black-and-white diamond pattern. The costume retains the character’s color scheme, making her instantly recognizable as the Joker‘s paramour and partner in crime.

It is also distinct enough to set Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn apart from other iterations of the character and give her a more grounded look similar to Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. If they follow Harley’s storyline from the comics, this will likely be her costume further into the movie after she becomes more enamored with Joker. Fans of the character know Quinn was initially Harleen Quinzel, a psychologist assigned to the Joker while he was in Arkham Asylum.

At the end of Todd Philip’s Joker, Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck fully embraced his new persona and was sent to Arkham, but not before inspiring plenty of people to take to the streets and cause chaos. It seems that Joker: Folie Deux will be taking place shortly after the events of that film. It will be interesting to see Lady Gaga play out the Harley Quinn storyline in live-action, especially since it’s apparently going to be a musical.

Along with Lady Gaga’s new role as Harley Quinn, Brendan Gleeson, and Catherine Keener are also joining Joker: Folie Deux in undisclosed roles. Joaquin Phoenix will also return as Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker, and Zazie Beetz is reprising her role as Sophie Dumond. Todd Philips is also back in the director’s chair.

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn

Despite being a DC-based film, Lady Gaga won’t be the official Harley Quinn of the DCU, nor will Phoenix be the Joker of the DCU. Todd Philips’ Joker films are firmly under the DC Elseworlds banner under the new direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran. This allows creators to make films like Joker: Folie Deux without affecting the continuity and main storyline of the DCU.

Matt Reeves’ Batman films and TV shows fall under the same category, as these films are critically and commercially liked enough to warrant more content. But, it doesn’t have to muddy the waters of the main timeline and allows Gunn and Safran to construct their own MCU-like tapestry for DC. So, if Lady Gaga isn’t playing Harley Quinn in the main DCU, there’s still the question of who will play her.

The best bet is probably Margot Robbie continuing to play the role, especially since Gunn already worked with her in The Suicide Squad and has tweeted about working with her again in the future. In the meantime, it’s still cool that we can see other actors like Lady Gaga interpret major characters like Harley Quinn. You can catch Joker: Folie Deux when it hits theaters in October 2024.
