Kevin Costner has had a lot of hits in his life but most of them are at the movie theater box office. Such has been the case forever for big Hollywood stars. Success was measured by the number of dollars you brought in for big-screen ticket sales. But now there’s a new world order when it comes to this kind of thing and streaming success is now right up there with the movies. His show Yellowstone has become a major hit and is now spawning spinoffs with a second just announced

Recently it was let on that Yellowstone would get a prequel spin-off for the popular show, but that would take place in a totally different timeline than the original. This second spin-off will feature characters from the original show meaning we could get a Kevin Costner appearance at some point. This new show will feature the characters Jimmy Hurdstrom and Walker. The two are currently ranch hands on the Dutton property but that looks like it will change on the new show.  Here’s the description of the new spin-off:

“Founded when Comanches still ruled West Texas, no ranch in America is more steeped in the history of the West than the 6666. Still operating as it did two centuries before, and encompassing an entire county, the 6666 is where the rule of law and the laws of nature merge in a place where the most dangerous thing one does is the next thing … The 6666 is synonymous with the merciless endeavor to raise the finest horses and livestock in the world, and ultimately where world-class cowboys are born and made.”

This next Yellowstone spin-off doesn’t currently have a title, though the current working one is 6666, a reference to another ranch that occupies a massive tract of land, possibly even bigger than the Dutton’s. It stands to reason the two characters, played by Jefferson White and Ryan Bingham will join that group for a new story, moving out from John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) eye and into broader pastures, so to speak. But there’s a good chance the two ranches are aware of each other and possibly even in competition, meaning there could be more than a little overlap with these two productions.

Some speculation though has that new ranch being located in Texas meaning the overlap might be in spirit only. That much remains to be seen, though the wandering nature of ranch hands could lend itself to a distancing of these two characters from the original. There’s some chance this is ironed out, or even set up in Season 4 of Yellowstone, maybe even through a falling out with Kevin Costner in some way.

It continues an ambitious franchise world-building for Yellowstone which has become one of the biggest hits for CBS All Access and will move to the newly created Paramount+ when it launches. Kevin Costner has led the charge for this show, detailing the struggle of the Duttons to maintain their land and their power in Wyoming with a number of competing factions looking to wrest away control of their ranch.

The other spin-off for Yellowstone will be a prequel, predating the Kevin Costner story by more than a hundred years. That show, also brought by series creator Taylor Sheridan will be Y:1883 and will take place in the titular year. This is set to debut sometime in 2021 and doesn’t require the moving around of pieces like the 6666 spinoff will.

Kevin Costner and Yellowstone are set to return for a fourth season sometime this year. Filming has already wrapped for the new season meaning we should be getting it sooner than later. In all, this is an exciting time for fans of the show with a ton of new stories on the way.
