The comedy centers on Maddie Baker (Jennifer Lawrence), a 32-year-old Uber driver and bartender struggling to make ends meet. After inheriting a house from her mother, the back taxes on the property lead her to a bankruptcy filing, which in turn causesher car to be repossessed.
An Uber driver without a car is a person who needs to find a new avenue for income. On the hunt to find a new way to make some extra dough, Maddie accepts an unusual Craigslist posting.
A wealthy couple (cryptocurrency investors) is looking to hire someone to “date” their nerdy 19-year-old son before he is off to college in the fall. In exchange for this service, the couple promises to give Maddie a Buick Regal.
Percy (the couple’s son), played by Andrew Barth Feldman, is awkward in every way and has no experience with girls or partying, and his parents hope that dating a hot girl (like Jennifer Lawrence) will help him gain some confidence before he begins his college journey. Maddie takes the couple up on their offer, and the dating charades begin.

Maddie first tries hitting on Percy while he is volunteering at the local animal shelter. She offers to give him a ride home. He takes her up on the offer but then thinks she is trying to kidnap him and he douses her in pepper spray.
