Even though Hugh Jackman has said he left behind the character of Wolverine with 2017’s Logan, that hasn’t stopped fans from hoping that the actor could return to the Adamantium claws in the future. Especially with the X-Men now owned by Disney, the possibility of Jackman as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems like a dream come true. If a new rumor is to be believed, it seems as though Jackman could possibly come back to the world of mutants.

As reported by Cosmic Book News, gossip writer Daniel Richtman posted a tweet of what looks like a production sheet, which says there is currently an “offer out to” Hugh Jackman. The offer was apparently made on September 10, 2020.

This news should be taken with a grain of salt, or maybe an entire glass full. First, Daniel Richtman is often grandiose in his assumptions and it’s rarely clear where he’s getting his news from. Second, nowhere in this photo that Richtman shares does it say anything about Disney, Marvel, or Wolverine, so there’s a lot of guessing going on here. Third, this isn’t some official document, but rather something anyone could type up in a minute. Fourth, it’s entirely possible Hugh Jackman could be offered some other entirely different role.

But taking all of those major addendums into account, if Hugh Jackman were to return as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, now would be a good time for it. There have been rumors abound that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is currently set for a March 25, 2022 release, might see alternate versions of characters we already know, possibly played by other actors.

Plus with the announcements that Doctor Strange will appear in the third Spider-Man film and that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his role of Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it certainly sounds like the Marvel Cinematic Universe might start integrating other characters from previous iterations. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe were to at least have cameos from characters outside this universe, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine would certainly be at the top of the list.

While Hugh Jackman has said that he’s done with Wolverine, back in 2017, Screen Rant asked if he would return to Wolverine if the rights were cleared and he could join the Avengers. Jackman replied, “At the moment, honestly, if I really did have them there, I probably wouldn’t have said this is the last.” Yet still, Jackman maintained that Logan was likely a good ending spot. “It just feels like this is the right time [to leave the character].”

It also seems that Hugh Jackman would be welcomed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with open arms. With Ryan Reynolds trying to also get Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he’d certainly like his old pal Wolverine back in the game as well. There have also been rumors that Marvel might be working on a Hulk vs. Wolverine film, although it’s not clear who would play Wolverine. Plus, both Sebastian Stan and Chris Hemsworth have stated that they would like to see Jackman return to Wolverine as an addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While it seemed like Disney and Marvel were planning on keeping the older, non-Marvel Cinematic Universe versions of these characters out of sight and out of mind, the possibilities of the multiverse make it seem like they are at least willing to reference the past. If anyone from the older films were to return, certainly the most desired would be Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and it seems as though Kevin Feige would be up for it as well. At this point, it seems as though the likelihood rests on Jackman, if he wants to retire his version of the character, or come back for more.
