COVID sex scene

California gave the movie and television industry the green light to start producing movies on June 12th, and Hollywood is eager to get back to work. Unfortunately in as part of getting permission from California to resume shooting the film industry has had to agree to abide by a series of COVID preventing guidelines, including the ones for social distancing. So that means they can’t even have actors standing close together… let alone kissing or having an intimate moment in bed.

Making that work is requiring creative solutions. Here’s what Hollywood has come up with so far, to get back to work.

Blow-Up Sex Doll Stand-Ins

The soap opera industry has found a creative and altogether disgusting solution to this problem. They’re using blow-up sex dolls.

The CBS series The Bold and the Beautiful became one of the first scripted series in the United States to resume production this week and when they did, like all soaps, they had some sex scenes to shoot. Executive producer Bradley Bell revealed how they’re doing it while respecting social distancing guidelines to Forbes saying, “We have some life-like blow up dolls that have been sitting around here for the past 15 years, that we’ve used for various other stories — (like) when people were presumed dead. We’re dusting off the dolls and putting new wigs and make-up on them and they’ll be featured in love scenes.

As if making their actors fake sex with blowup dolls wasn’t gross enough, another gross layer on this whole thing is that they are having sex with blowup dolls designed to be corpses. So basically they’re having sex with inflatable corpses.

It’ll take some creative camera work to make that look real. Meanwhile when there’s a closeup where the doll won’t work, Bell says they plan to use real life spouses and partners of actors as stand-ins during those physical contact scenes.

As for kissing scenes, those are going to get really weird. On your average episode of The Bold and the Beautiful there’s a lot of kissing, but from now on when you see someone in a lip-lock on the show they’ll actually be kissing air. The plan is to have actors stand with their back to the camera and pretend to kiss with no one actually there to kiss back. I have no idea how that could possibly look real, but it’s kind of sad that it has come to this.

While The Bold and the Beautiful did start some filming this week, they have just stopped again to adjust some of their safety guidelines. They expect to resume filming blowup dolls and air kisses soon.

Shooting Movie Sex Scenes With Social Distancing Guidelines

50 Shades distancing

In the world of making movies, according to The Sun the Film Editors union is circulating a series of strategies designed to deal with social distancing guidelines. Those suggestions include re-evaluating or re-writing scripts to avoid scenes which require close contact and using CGI actors to create computer generated sex-scenes.

The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has circulated similar guidelines. Following them will result in, at best, a lot more CGI butts and at worst, weird movies where no one ever stands close to each other and instead they just shout lines at each other from across the room. Neither tactic sounds particularly realistic or appealing.

A better move for the film industry might be simply to abandon California and work in states with more industry-friendly restrictions. But given the nature of actors, they probably won’t find a lot of talent willing to cooperate with them if they do.
