Gundam Seed FREEDOM Anime Reveals The Best Gundam Yet

By Chris Snellgrove | Published

“What’s your favorite Gundam” doesn’t really work as a pickup line, but it’s a great question to get all the anime nerds in the room to start shouting at each other. For example, old-school nerds love the retro cool of the RX-78-2 introduced back in Mobile Suit Gundam, and slightly younger nerds may prefer the Tallgeese or perhaps the suit introduced in Gundam Wing. Now, the recent trailer for the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM movie has revealed what might be the coolest the fandom has ever seen.

To better understand the suits, you need to first understand what the film is all about. This upcoming film actually serves as a sequel to the original 2002 anime series Mobile Suit Gundam SEED and its sequel series, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny.

Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM is part of the franchise’s Cosmic Era timeline.

At this point, Gundam has a multiverse that could rival Marvel, so you should know that these two movies take place in the Cosmic Era timeline (not to be confused with the original Universal Century timeline or Gundam Wing’s After Colony timeline).

What is Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM about, then? We don’t know too many story details yet, but it looks like the plot will revolve very heavily around returning characters Kira Yamato, Athrun Zala, and Shinn Asuka.

Based on a translation of an earlier trailer by Silicon Era, it sounds like the movie will be about whether its characters embrace their “destiny chosen” for them or instead embrace “the freedom to rebel.”

Between these designs and the sweet designs for the Black Knights Squad, it’s clear that this new movie is giving us some of the prettiest Mobile Suits we have ever seen.

In other words, what fans have come to expect from a Gundam story: introspection, character development, and a light sprinkling of melodrama. While those elements keep fans coming back, the major appeal of any Gundam tale is seeing the Mobile Suits unleashing hell on their enemies. And in this latest trailer, we get a collection of some very badass new suits.

Arguably, the coolest one in the trailer is Kira Yamato’s Rising Freedom Gundam, which has a wildly colorful battle mode that already has us wanting to put a gunpla model together. It can also transform into an MA mode that basically turns it into a jet.

While it isn’t the first Gundam that can do that, we always have a soft spot for Mobile Suits that have the spirit (or should that be “spark?”) of the Transformers.

For fans of the earlier Mobile Suit Gundam Seed stories, the most exciting thing about the upcoming film is that we’re getting some upgraded Mobile Suits. Athrun Zala’s old Justice is now the bigger, badder Immortal Justice, and Kira Yamato’s old Mobile Suit has been upgraded into the Rising Freedom.

Between these designs and the sweet designs for the Black Knights Squad, it’s clear that this new movie is giving us some of the prettiest Mobile Suits we have ever seen.

The new trailer for Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM shows off new versions of the suits.

A good-looking Gundam doesn’t necessarily translate to an awesome movie, but given the breathless action on display in the trailer, we think this film will kick all kinds of ass. Plus, as longtime fans, part of us is happy that we’re getting an original movie rather than damn compilation. And if anyone wants to continue the debate about which suitsare better, you can find us in the theater when Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM premieres on January 26, 2024.
