It is not a whole lot to go on, but it is reassuring to see that Godzilla vs. Kong is actually going to be released. The movie has had a long trip to get in front of audiences and any footage is a nice reminder that it actually is coming out. And now, it looks like it might debut in both theaters and at home on HBO Max. The monster mash tentpole film is part of Warner Bros.’ 2021 slate of movies, which have all been announced as simultaneous releases on the streaming service HBO Max.

However, it looks like fellow production partner Legendary might not be happy with Warner Bros.’ decision to put Godzilla vs. Kong on HBO Max. It is unclear at this moment exactly what they might do in regards to potentially halting the film’s release or having it removed from the HBO Max slate. No matter what, it certainly seems like Legendary was surprised by this momentous decision.

Godzilla vs. Kong is supposed to be the big blowout bash for Warner Bros./Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise. They have had three films so far – Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla: King of the Monsters – and it is unclear if it is intended to be the final film in this current iteration of the monsters. Considering how big the buildup for Godzilla vs. Kong has been, fans are hoping that this is not the last go-around with these versions of the giant beasties.

It is a little surprising that it has taken this long to see any footage from Godzilla vs. Kong. Principal photography on the film actually ended back in April 2019. It has been more than a year since the film entered post-production. The most we have seen is a smattering of images and the above logo that was only recently revealed. Naturally, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused all films to change their release dates, but even Godzilla vs. Kong feels like it should have gotten a trailer by now.

With this very first footage released, that is exactly what fans are hoping is coming later this week. A full trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong would go a long way in getting audiences excited for the beatdown which is currently scheduled to release in May. With only five months left before its release, the advertising needs to start kicking into gear. Again, the hope is that this is doing just that and we can expect a full-length trailer before the week is out.

We are eagerly awaiting our first in-depth look at Godzilla vs. Kong. The two titans have been building towards this battle for a long time now. The last time they crossed paths was in 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla. This rematch has been nearly sixty years in the making. We are ready to see it!
