Giancarlo Esposito may very well be the modern watermark for the greatest villain portrayals on television. In addition to antagonistic appearances in The Mandalorian, The Boys, and Far Cry 6, the 65-year-old star just concluded his nearly 15-year stint playing Gustavo Fring, the obsessive-compulsive methamphetamine peddler masquerading as Albuquerque’s most efficient fried chicken restauranteur in both AMC’s Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. According to a recent write-up in Deadline, however, Esposito may be taking a break from portraying unstoppable monsters and instead begin facing off against one, as he has been cast in a cryptic upcoming monster film distributed by Universal.

Very little is known about the film at this time. Giancarlo Esposito will be joining a growing cast of excellent performers, including Euphoria‘s Angus Cloud, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s Kathryn Newton, and Scream VI‘s Melissa Barrera. Additional actors attached to the project include Alisha Weir, Kevin Durand, Will Catlett, and Dan Stevens, with producers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett set to direct.

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett recently worked together under their production team Radio Silence, producing such visceral horror pictures as Ready or Not, 2022’s Scream, and Scream IV.

The film, which is said to be a horror thriller revolving around an unnamed, untitled monster of some sort, is set to arrive in theaters on April 19, 2024.Additional production studios assisting Radio Silence on the shoot include Project X Entertainment, as well as Universal Studios. The film may serve as a rare opportunity for Giancarlo Esposito to explore his acting abilities as a protagonist, in stark contrast to his cold, calculated villains, which litter the annals of his IMDb credits like slain enemies resting at his feet.

With just under 200 acting credits listed on his IMDb since his career began several decades ago, Giancarlo Esposito has become one of the most prolific performers in modern media. After becoming a household name for his breakout performance of Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad, Esposito would go on to portray incredible and complex characters such as Community‘s Gilbert Lawson, Jorge in the Maze Runner film series, The Boys‘ cold-as-ice corporate executive Stan Edgar, The Mandalorian‘s Moff Gideon, and even Lex Luthor in the Max original Harley Quinn series.

In addition to his upcoming performance in the untitled monster film, Giancarlo Esposito is set to appear in half a dozen upcoming projects in various stages of active production. This includesNickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, as well as the Russo brother’s helmed The Electric State. Esposito also appears on the laundry list of performers set to bring legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola’s long-awaited film Megalopolis to life, sharing the screen with the likes of Aubrey Plaza, Adam Driver, Dustin Hoffman, Shia LaBeouf, and many more.

For now, all fans can do is patiently wait for more details to arrive regarding the untitled monster film. While it remains unclear if the monster in question will appear in the form of a humanoid slasher such as Freddy Krueger or Michael Meyers, or a humungous kaiju such as Godzilla or King Kong, one thing remains certain: Giancarlo Esposito will bring his all to the performance, undoubtedly leaving fans with chills when the film arrives on the big screen.
