After Patrick Stewart finally confirmed the obvious, that he was in fact the voice you heard in the first extended trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it didn’t take long for fans to continue speculating on his ultimate role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Was this going to be a one-off kind of thing, a little hat-tip to the previous X-Men before moving into new mutant territory? Or would he be here to stay as Professor Charles Xavier? Well, it looks like we have our answer. The latest Giant Freakin Robot exclusive from our trusted and proven source has it that Patrick Stewart is going to be involved in at least one more Marvel project before it’s all said and done.

While our source hasn’t been specific about where we will see Patrick Stewart after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is pretty clear that he will play at least something of a bigger hand (or brain) in furthering along the story of the Multiverse. The franchise is only growing these days so there are numerous possibilities for how things could shake out. But it does seem like they will at least try to (hopefully) bring some kind of resolution around the character within the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Now, it’s worth noting that this version of Professor Xavier that Patrick Stewart plays in Doctor Strange 2 isn’t likely to be the same exact one we knew from the original X-Men stories. Not only does the setting appear very different than anything we ever saw in that universe, but we also know how his story ended up rounding out in that franchise. We saw his final moments in 2017s Logan which brought that timeline to a rather fitting close. So this version is almost definitely a Multiverse version or variant of the character. But again, with these timelines and iterations, it’s nearly anyone’s guess how it plays out. I suspect most of what we’ll see over this phase is the characters working to restore the single timeline after it got all screwed up in Loki.

There is speculation that this version of Patrick Stewart as Professor X in Doctor Strange 2 is part of the Illuminati, a powerful group of superheroes from the comic books who act as something of a council of protectors for Earth and the universe as a whole. Other members, at least originally, include Tony Stark, Reed Richards (could we get a Fantastic Four shout here?), Black Bolt, Stephen Strange, and T’Challa. Marvel need not stick to that original group’s makeup for obvious reasons, but there is growing sentiment this is at least a version of that council.

Patrick Stewart first appeared on the big screen as Professor Charles Xavier in 2000s X-Men which was among the group of movies that helped usher the comic book movie genre into the realm of blockbuster franchises. It was near perfect casting for the cerebral and stoic character who was among the most powerful people in the world. Getting him back into the mix for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even in what might amount to only minor roles in two movies is still well worth it, and is just another bridge from the older versions of characters to whatever comes next.
