The Disney+ Sci-Fi Thriller Epic More Creative Than Any Modern Star Wars

By Britta DeVore | Published

2023 was a solid year for sci-fi fans, with movies like They Cloned Tyrone, Knock At the Cabin, and Leave the World Behind keeping audiences on the edge of their seats both in theaters and at home. Among the favorites over the last year, Gareth Edwards treated viewers to an action-filled spectacle in his latest project, The Creator. Now, those holding a subscription to both Disney+ and Hulu can stream the talked-about film from the comfort of their own homes as it can be spotted under Disney+’s Hulu section.

The Creator Puts Modern Star Wars To Shame

Part dystopian drama, part space age tale, The Creator gives new Star Wars films like The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker a run for their money. The story is set in 2070, nearly two decades after mankind began to wage a war against artificial intelligence that was posing a nuclear threat to life as we know it. The survival of humanity hangs in the balance as it’s one man’s task to find a being known only as the “Creator” and use the Creator’s mysterious weapon to put an end to death and destruction.Blending familiar faces with a handful of up-and-coming names, The Creator stars John David Washington (Tenet), Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians), Allison Janney (The West Wing), Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai), and country music star, Sturgill Simpson.

The Director Comes From Star Wars

The Creator is the latest film to come from director Gareth Edwards, who also co-penned the screenplay alongside Academy Award nominee Chris Weitz (About a Boy). A tight link to the sci-fi universe, Edwards’ name will be recognized by many as the helmer of one of the best big-screen titles to come from the Star Wars universe over the last decade – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. He’s also lent his vision to 2014’s Godzilla and 2010’s Monsters.

The Aesthetic Comes From Filming In Thailand

Like his other work, Edwards wanted to lean away from filming on a set for The Creator, scoping out a sprawling amount of locations from Vietnam to Japan, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Thailand to be the hub for his next film. Eventually, Thailand would win out, with the film’s incredible scenery all thanks to the country’s natural beauty. Inspired by classics like Apocalypse Now, Blade Runner, Rain Man, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Edwards put his magic touch on his take on a modern sci-fi epic.

The Creator’s Box Office Haul

Released at the very end of September 2023, The Creator had its fair share of competition at the box office, facing off against PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie and Saw X. Still, the movie held its own well into October when other contenders including The Exorcist: Believer and Five Nights at Freddy’s scared up viewers. By the time its theatrical run had come to an end, The Creator deposited $104 million from the global box office into its bank account against its $80 million production budget.

Stream The Creator Under Disney+’s Hulu Tab

Aside from its streaming home of Disney+ via its Hulu section, The Creator is only available on demand and for rent on platforms like Amazon Prime Video. For those who love a great dystopian sci-fi flick with a creative edge they haven’t seen before, The Creator deserves a bump to the top of your viewing list.
