With December coming to an end, Netflix is preparing to ring in the New Year with a ton of major movie titles. Along with popular films like Phantom Thread, Braveheart, The Town, Taxi Driver, and True Grit, the streamer’s catalog will also feature The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo starring Daniel Craig. So if you’ve already binged your way through Netflix’s list of holiday movies, you need to add this throwback film to your streaming list.

Billed as a neo-noir psychological thriller, the film is based on the 2005 novel by Swedish writer Stieg Larsson. It was directed by David Fincher from a screenplay by Steven Zaillian. The story follows financial reporter Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), who’s hired by Henrik Vanger to solve a 40-year-old murder case. As he searches for answers, Mikael crosses paths with computer hacker Lisbeth Salander who doesn’t trust anyone.

Starring alongside Daniel Craig is Christopher Plummer as Henrik Vanger and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander. The movie also features the acting talents of Stellan Skarsgård, Steven Berkoff, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen, Joely Richardson, Geraldine James, Goran Visnjic, and Donald Sumpter.

Sony Pictures Entertainment began development on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in 2009, with production taking place in the United States, United Kingdom, and Sweden. It took the studio a few months to get the rights to the book while recruiting the team of Zaillian and Fincher to bring the story to the big screen. Casting for the lead roles was also challenging as Daniel Craig faced scheduling conflicts, while several actresses were sought to play Lisbeth Salander.

Released in 2011, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo premiered at Odeon Leicester Square in London on December 12th of that year. It was a critical and commercial success, earning an impressive $232.6 million on a $90 million budget. The film also received positive reviews from critics, who praised Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara’s performances as well as the story’s somber tone. Moreover, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was chosen by the National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2011. The movie was also a candidate for various awards. But the project’s biggest achievement was winning the Academy Award for Best Film Editing, while Mara’s performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Unfortunately, Daniel Craig didn’t make the cut.

Nonetheless, over the years Daniel Craig has cemented his place as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after movie stars. After training at the National Youth Theatre in London and graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Craig began his career on stage. He made his film debut in 1992’s The Power of One and went on to appear in various films with his breakout role coming in the 1996 drama series Our Friends in the North.

But it wasn’t until he was cast as the new James Bond in 2006’s Casio Royale that Daniel Craig became a household name. His portrayal of the superspy catapulted him to superstardom and earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Since then his non-007 appearances include 2007’s The Golden Compass, 2008’s Defiance, 2011’s Cowboys & Aliens, and 2017’s Logan Lucky. He also starred in the mystery-comedy Knives Out in 2019, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Netflix has picked up the rights to two sequels. Knives Out 2 was filmed in 2021 and will hopefully release on Netflix in 2022.

Daniel Craig can currently be seen in No Time To Die. The 25th installment in the James Bond franchise is his final outing as the superspy. The movie also stars Ralph Fiennes as M, Lea Seydoux as Dr. Madeleine Swann, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, Ben Whishaw as A, Rory Kinnear as Tanner, and Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter. New cast members confirmed for the film include Dali Benssalah, Billy Magnussen, Ana De Armas, David Dencik, Lashana Lynch, and Rami Malek

The story is set five years after the capture of Ernst Stavro Blofeld. James Bond (Daniel Craig) is living a quiet life after leaving active service when he is approached by CIA officer Felix Leiter, who enlists his help in the search for Valdo Obruchev, a missing scientist. When it becomes apparent that Obruchev has been abducted, Bond must confront a villain whose schemes could lead to the death of millions. No Time To Die is currently available to rent through Amazon Prime Video and other major streaming platforms.
