Ever since 1993’s Super Mario Bros. movie, Nintendo has been notoriously protective of their brands. Yet in recent years, Nintendo has allowed more leeway with their properties, leading to cell phone games, LEGO sets, an upcoming theme park, and even a new Super Mario Bros. movie from Minions creators Illumination. For years, Nintendo fans have wondered if arguably Nintendo’s most cinematic experience, the Legend of Zelda franchise, would ever make the leap to a film or television adaptation. If a new rumor is to be believed, Zelda might finally come to the real world, and the princess might be played by Brie Larson.

We Got This Covered is reporting that Brie Larson has show interest in playing Princess Zelda in an upcoming project. The rumor hints that not only would Larson play Zelda in the Legend of Zelda film that Netflix is supposedly developing, she’d also like to make her own series centered around Zelda. To be fair, We Got This Covered also made a similar report three months ago, yet no announcement has been made thus far.

Another recent rumor has said that Netflix would like Spider-Man: Far From Home’s Tom Holland to play Link in their Legend of Zelda movie. Holland is no stranger to playing video game characters, considering the actor just wrapped the Uncharted film, in which Holland will playing another iconic video game character, Nathan Drake. But even for audiences that have no interest in video games, the combination of Tom Holland and Brie Larson would be enough of a draw for many.

While Brie Larson would certainly be a great choice for Zelda, the actress has also stated that she wants to play another famous Nintendo character: Metroid’s Samus Aran. Larson previously was Samus for Halloween and after posting images of her in the costume on Instagram, with many responding that they’d love to see her in the role. Larson has even done ads for Nintendo in recent years, so it seems as though the actress is at least trying to get on the company’s good side.

Netflix has found an untapped resource in making adaptations of popular video games recently. After debuting their anime take on Castlevania, Netflix released the massively popular series, The Witcher in 2019. Netflix has already announced an animated spin-off and a live-action prequel series for The Witcher. Netflix also is working on adaptations of Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil amongst many other brands. Even if Netflix doesn’t work with Nintendo, there’s plenty of video game adaptations for Brie Larson to join in on.

In addition to all the video game love going on at Netflix, there are also rumors that Brie Larson might be signing a deal with the streaming service to make her own projects. While this seemed to imply more films like her directorial debut Unicorn Store, which was released through Netflix, there’s no reason why a Zelda spinoff series couldn’t also fall under the umbrella of this deal.

The Legend of Zelda is already a huge get for Netflix, but adding an entire spinoff series starring Brie Larson would almost be too good to be true for the company. The Legend of Zelda has been a series that many have questioned how it could work in another medium, but if this rumor is true, at the very least the casting would be perfect.
