See Blue Beetle In Comic-Accurate Costume In First Look At New DC Movie
Check out the first look at the Xolo Mariduena in the Blue Beetle costume. It looks like they stuck to the comics with this upcoming flick.
Although the future of the DC Extended Universe is a little uncertain, Warner Bros is soldiering on with several superhero productions. One of them is Blue Beetle which has been years in the making, with Jaime Reyes set to make his big-screen debut next year. Cobra Kai star, Xolo Maridueña will suit up as the blue-blazoned Teen Titan, going up against Susan Sarandon’s evil Victoria Kord.
Now, images of Maridueña wearing the iconic Blue Beetle costume have emerged online. In a series of set photos on social media, fans get their first look at the comics-accurate suit. Jaime Reyes is seen with and without the superhero’s helmet. The ensemble was designed by Mayes C. Rubeo, whose designs also appear in WandaVision, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Thor: Ragnarok. Reaction to the photos has been largely positive, with fans praising the character’s remarkable similarity to his comic book counterpart. The movie is currently deep into production, with filming taking place in Atlanta.

Much like Blue Beetle fans, Xolo Maridueña has been excited about his role in the highly anticipated movie. He even talked about what it was like to wear the suit in an interview with USA Today earlier this year. “We’ve done two suit fittings. They’re hoping that I get more buff by the time we actually start filming. But I’ve seen the suit, and it looks awesome,” he told the publication. Speaking about working on the film, the 20-year-old said it is going to be very important since Latinos and all people of color will be represented onscreen. He added that it’s also a story that folks haven’t really seen before.
Blue Beetle is directed by Angel Manuel Soto from a script by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer of Universal’s Scarface fame. The movie, which is the first major superhero project headlined by a Latino character, was initially an HBO Max original before Warner Bros. and DC Films gave it theatrical status. Starring alongside Xolo Maridueña as Jamie Reyes is Bruna Marquezine and Belissa Escobedo who appear as the protagonist’s love interest Penny and younger sister Milagros, respectively. Harvey Guillén is also part of the cast in an undisclosed role.
American teenager Jaime Reyes is the third character to take up the Blue Beetle mantle after Dan Garret and Ted Kord. Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, the character made his comic book debut in 2006’s Infinite Crisis #5. Following its success, the young superhero was given his own monthly series (simply called Blue Beetle) which hit store shelves two months later.
Jaime Reyes’ origin story begins when he discovers the Blue Beetle scarab half-buried in a disused lot. Curious about what it might be, he takes it home with him. That night, the scarab comes alive and grafts itself to the base of Jaime’s spine. Once completely fused to its host, it bestows him with a suit of extraterrestrial armor that can be modified to enhance his speed and strength. It can also be used to create weapons, wings, and shields.
The highly anticipated Blue Beetle starring Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters in August 2023.
