Leslie Grace as Batgirl

Batgirl lives…sorta. Twitter account @NebsGoodTakes posted a thread recently that details the scrapped Batgirl‘s entire plot, and it sounds cool enough that fans are sure to get angry all over again. The thread is supported by various behind-the-scenes photos and videos that somehow managed to survive the Warner Bros. Discovery post-merger purge.

As most people know, Warner Bros. shelved Batgirl last year in order to use the unreleased film as a tax write-off. This understandably angered many DC fans who were excited to see Leslie Grace as the first live-action Batgirl since 1997’s ill-received Batman and Robin. Not to mention what would have been the pre-Flash return of Michael Keaton as Batman.

A fan has threaded together what they claim is the complete story of the shelved DC movie Batgirl.

Now that the Batgirl plot is out there, it’s sure to stir up some fresh anger among the fans because it sounds like it would have been a decent flick. According to @NebsGoodTakes the movie would have started with a young Barbara Gordon taking an interest in Karate and using martial arts to takedown a schoolyard bully.

From there, Barbara goes on patrol with her father, Commissioner Gordon—a returning JK Simmons—only to have her first encounter with Batman. This unplanned run-in would have been what inspires Batgirl to follow in the Dark Knight’s footsteps.

The leaked Batgirl plot gives us a peek at what could have been and seems to contradict… the studio’s claim that the film was “unreleasable,” a claim both Grace and Fraser have been calling bat guano since the very beginning.

Meanwhile, Ted Carson, AKA Firefly—@NebsGoodTakes says it’s the Carson version of Firefly who would’ve appeared rather than the widely reported Garfield Lynns—would be introduced as the film’s main antagonist.

According to the leaked Batgirl plot, Firefly would have been an ex-hitman specializing in arson who tries to get the mob to give him his old job back. Judging by what little pictures and video we have of the movie, Firefly’s inclusion would have resulted in several on-set pyrotechnics, a rare commodity now that CGI has largely replaced practical fire effects in Hollywood.

In fact, the loss of Brendan Fraser’s reportedly unhinged performance as Firefly might just be the biggest travesty to come out of the whole Batgirl fiasco. One of the tweets from the Batgirl plot leak thread describes Fraser’s performance as “deranged” but also notes that the villain has a noble inspiration—his sick wife has no insurance and needs meds desperately.

Given that Fraser is experiencing something of a renaissance lately with the success of Doom Patrol and The Whale, it’s a shame that fans will never get a chance to see him chew the scenery as an over-the-top villain.

The leaked Batgirl plot gives us a peek at what could have been and seems to contradict—on paper, at least—the studio’s claim that the film was “unreleasable,” a claim both Grace and Fraser have been calling bat guano since the very beginning.

While Brendan Fraser and Leslie Grace both have upcoming projects their fans can look forward to, knowing there is a mostly finished movie starring both of them and Michael freakin’ Keaton as Batman is truly heartbreaking.

However, there is still a kernel of hope for fans to cling to. In a world where fans campaigned for a Zack Snyder cut of Justice League and eventually got it, it’s not too hard to imagine the same thing happening to Batgirl. And if it doesn’t? Well, at least fans still have the leaked Batgirl plot as a consultation prize.
