Baby Yoda was instantly one of the most talked-about facets of The Mandalorian. The fact that he remained nameless for so long led to him being adopted by fans all around the world as “Baby Yoda.” Although Disney tried to stress that he would be called the Child until we learned his real name, that just didn’t stick as much as Baby Yoda did. But now, we are going to see if that moniker still sticks around because The Mandalorian just revealed that adorable little Jedi’s real name.

In the newest episode of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin takes Baby Yoda to Ahsoka Tano, one of the few remaining Jedi in the galaxy. Upon their meeting, Ahsoka Tano reveals that she can tap into the thoughts of the Child. She then reveals that the Child’s true name is Grogu. It’s a small detail but one that has immense ramifications for the future of The Mandalorian. Essentially, we are probably going to hear, “Grogu,” a lot more for the rest of the season.

What is more interesting about this revelation is that we learn a little bit more about Baby Yoda’s… er, Grogu’s backstory. Ahsoka Tano reveals that he was raised in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. During his time there, he apparently received some training from Jedi masters. He remained in the Jedi Temple during the Clone Wars but was secreted away when Emperor Palpatine executed Order 66 and murdered the Jedi. He learned to keep his Force powers hidden in order to avoid detection. After that, Ahsoka Tano says that his memory is dark. It looks like we will still learn some important things about Grogu’s backstory before the show is done.

However, there is another larger question to ask now that we know Baby Yoda is actually called Grogu: will fans adopt that name? Though we were always destined to get an official name for the Child, there was always the issue of whether or not the Baby Yoda title would stick around. Frankly, it probably seems like it will. Even though we learned that Din Djarin is the true name of the Mandalorian, very few fans refer to him by that. He still goes by “the Mandalorian” or “Mando” for many viewers and characters in the show. It will be interesting to see if we start to hear the name Grogu pop up a lot in these last few episodes of Season 2.

So, there it is. Grogu. No matter what name the writers of The Mandalorian came up with, it was likely going to feel a little underwhelming. That was inevitable. Prepare to see a ton of Grogu merchandise start flying off the shelves. It will be intriguing to see if the Baby Yoda label sticks around and if Disney will ever officially acknowledge it. If a character in The Mandalorian ever called Grogu “Baby Yoda”, that would probably break the internet. We will have to see if Disney decides to ever utter those words or if we will only be hearing. “Grogu,” from here on.
