Along with heroes and villains introduced in the animated series, something else from Star Wars: Rebels is coming to Ahsoka. According to our trusted and proven sources, Rosario Dawson’s upcoming Disney+ series will make the Star Wars Multiverse a live-action reality. The World Between Worlds, first seen in Rebels, will return in Ahsoka and will be used to spin off a What If…? style series.

In one world, Ahsoka will see what would’ve happened if it was her, instead of Obi-Wan Kenobi, who had to fight the fateful duel against Anakin on Mustafar. In another, she will see a reality in which she gave in to the Dark Side and served Darth Vader.

At some point in Ahsoka, the eponymous hero will once more see into the World Between Worlds, where the results of different “what if” scenarios will be revealed to her. Most notably, it will be the World Between Worlds that facilitates Hayden Christensen’s cameo in the series as Anakin Skywalker.

Just as Marvel‘s Loki opened the door for What If…?, Lucasfilm’s plan is to use Ahsoka to launch a similar series. We don’t know if that series will be live-action, or animated like What If…?, though without knowing more details, an animated show would seem the most likely option.

It’s fitting that Lucasfilm is looking to make its own What If…? style series, considering Star Wars made something of a fun cameo in the original. In episode 8 of What If…?, Uatu the Watcher and an Infinity Stone-powered Ultron battle across the Multiverse, and their fight flashes in and out of different realities. One of the worlds the pair visit in their clash is made to look a whole lot like Mustafar.

Bringing a live-action World Between Worlds into Ahsoka is a bold move for Star Wars, considering things like multiverses and time travel have traditionally been kept far away for the franchise’s live-action productions. In light of this news, however, there’s reason to think this may have been in the works for a while.

Earlier this year, CBR reported on Marvel Comics’ Star Wars #30, arguing that a scene in the comic book hinted at a Multiverse. Then there is the non-canonical animated Disney+ series Star Wars: Visions, and of course the expanded universe which was officially de-canonized after Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm.

Using Ahsoka to spin off a What If…? type series could actually be a clever move on Lucasfilm’s part to reel back all the fans still sore over losing that expanded universe. That kind of series would give Lucasfilm the opportunity to adapt Legends material, which could potentially — in a sense — make it canon.

After all, if everything in Legends and Visions takes place in different corners of the Star Wars multiverse, it’s all canon: it’s just not canon to the prime timeline.
