She might be the older sister to Timothée Chalamet, one of the world’s hottest actors, but Pauline Chalamet is a rising star in her own right. Having made her feature film debut two years ago in Judd Apatow’s dramedy The King of Staten Island opposite Pete Davidson, Pauline Chalamet has quickly let Hollywood know that her younger brother isn’t the only one in the family who can act. So, what is she all about?

PAULINE CHALAMET IS 30 YEARS OLD AND ACTING WASN’T HER FIRST CHOICE

Pauline Chalamet was born on January 25, 1992, in New York City. Early on, it was dancing that caught her fancy and she took classes at the School of American Ballet. When she was a 10-year-old youngster, she grabbed her first professional appearance by dancing in the Broadway production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It appeared that dancing ballet would be her future until an accident while biking derailed her dreams of being a ballet dancer.

With dancing no longer an option, Pauline Chalamet turned, reluctantly, toward drama. She went to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School where she majored in drama. Still unsure if acting was in her blood, she wasn’t keen on the idea of college either.

Eventually, though, Pauline Chalamet applied to Bard College, was accepted, and double majored in political science and theater. One of her early ideas was to become a human-rights lawyer, but it didn’t take long for her to nix that thought. Acting it was.

Pauline Chalamet graduated college in 2014 and worked a number of odd jobs to help pay for her student loans. In the meantime, she began writing. This led her to a series of short films she both wrote and directed and which we will touch on in a bit.

As far as acting, Pauline actually started back in 1999 by appearing in one episode of the long-running soap opera, One Life to Live. Ten years later, she grabbed an episode of Royal Pains and while she acted in all of her short films, her first major break came when Judd Apatow hired her for The King of Staten Island.

SHE STARS IN THE SEX LIVES OF COLLEGE GIRLS AND HAS A ROLE IN KING OF STATEN ISLAND

It was right after Pauline Chalamet made her feature film debut in Judd Apatow’s The King of State Island that she was approached by The Office vet and star and creator of shows like The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling, for a project Kaling was working on called The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Kaling loved Pauline’s work and felt she was perfect for the role of Kimberly Finkle, the incoming freshman who was a valedictorian at her public school in Arizona. Finkle is a smart girl (obviously), but she is also caring and ambitious. She just isn’t too socially aware.

The 13-episode first season not only follows Pauline Chalamet’s Kimberly, but also her three college roommates, Amrit Kaur as Bela, Reneé Rapp as Leighton, and Alyah Chanelle Scott as Whitney, as they navigate their brand-new world as college freshmen. The four are roommates at Essex College, the prestigious New England university.

As the title suggests, there is some sex going on for the new freshmen. For instance, Kaur’s Bela is one who is “extremely sex-positive” and talks like a veteran of the act but come to find out, she only lost her virginity prior to heading off to Essex. Along with the talk of sex, there is also a fair amount of nudity (graphic at times) and sex scenes, all of which Pauline Chalamet had no trouble performing.

Earlier this year, Pauline Chalamet appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and spoke with guest host Julie Bowen (Modern Family) to first explain the series, then talk about how she was actually very comfortable being naked on set. She surmised that while she was in her own college days, Pauline was “naked a lot,” so it just felt normal to her.

“I would take my clothes off a lot,” Chalamet told Bowen and the audience. “It was like, part of who I am…so it wasn’t that hard.” She said another thing that made it easier for her, and the rest of the cast, to get naked was the fact that they filmed during the pandemic and that meant fewer people on the set.

She also joked that everyone was masked up “so you can’t really see people’s facial reactions.” You can see Pauline Chalamet’s conversation with Bowen below.

Amazingly enough, it wasn’t getting naked that was the most difficult thing for Pauline Chalamet, but instead, it was having to record “sex noises” for the series. To her, this was “cringe.” As she explained to Variety, “The worst is when you’re in ADR when you’re watching the [scene] and they’re like, ‘We need a bit more moaning.’” She says recording those noises was much worse than actually filming the sex scenes.

“You’re standing there and they’re like, ‘OK. Do a few more with your mouth open,’” she explained. For those who aren’t familiar with the term, ADR, this is “automated dialogue replacement,” and it happens all the time in film and television. It is where actors go into the sound booth and re-record some of their dialogue to improve the film’s sound quality.

PAULINE CHALAMET ALSO LOVES TO WRITE AND DIRECT

Before The Sex Lives of College Girls fell into her lap, Pauline Chalamet was a writer and a director. These were all short films and could be something she returns to in the near future. She wrote and directed the shorts Between Fear and Laughter (2016), The Group Chat (2019), and Cosmic Disaster (2021).

HER YOUNGER BROTHER IS TIMOTHEE CHALAMET

Even though Pauline Chalamet has begun to carve out a nice career for herself, her brother Timothée Chalamet is the one who gets much of the publicity. By all appearances, though, the sister has no issue with her brother’s fame. And apparently, Timothée appreciates the work that his older sister has done in The Sex Lives of College Girls. “My brother loves it,” she said to E! News.

“You’ll have to get the story from him, because I believe he did watch it with one of my parents. So that is that.” While Pauline Chalamet was on the topic of her parents and her hit series, “No, I don’t watch this with my parents,” she exclaimed. “Are you kidding?”

Timothée continues to make a splash in Hollywood. Not only is he starring in the romantic horror film, Bones and All, but he is also set to reprise his role as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Two.

After that, Timothée will be seen in the highly anticipated film, Wonka, where he will take on the role of a young Willy Wonka.

PAULINE CHALAMET IS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

As her star grows, so does Pauline Chalamet’s presence on social media. She is very active on Instagram, posting updates to her daily life constantly. Because of her hit show, Pauline finds herself in front of the camera more often, modeling clothes and various other items.

She also loves to promote her series and recently posted a picture of her and her co-stars celebrating the fact that season 2 of The Sex Lives of College Girls has dropped its first two episodes on HBO Max.

Pauline Chalamet’s star is on the rise. She is a talented actress whose well-rounded background in writing and directing could make her a serious triple threat. We are looking forward to seeing what is next for her.
