Britney Spears has inarguably had a terrible last few years as she’s struggled to break out of her conservatorship with her father and gain the right to be her own human being. Now that she’s out and able to use her real voice for the first time in years, the “Sometimes” singer is releasing a memoir that will recount her life – the good, the bad, and the ugly. According to People, one of the chapters in the pop star’s book is an especially heartbreaking one as Britney Spears reveals that she became pregnant while dating Justin Timberlake but was swayed into an abortion.

Considered to be pop royalty, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were the “it” couple in the late ‘90s and early 2000s which is when Spears says the abortion happened. Describing the event as “a surprise,” Spears says that her shocking pregnancy was in no way “a tragedy” as her love for Timberlake was so strong that she fully “expected us to have a family together one day.” Yet, even she admits that the timing was terrible.

In her upcoming memoir, Britney Spears opens up about her very public life growing up, revealing that she had an abortion while dating Justin Timberlake.

Still, Britney Spears was eager to have the child and welcome a bundle of joy into the world with the so-thought love of her life. On the other hand, Spears writes that “Justin [Timberlake] definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy,” telling his girlfriend that they were “way too young” to be raising a baby. As Spears puts it, she knew she wanted to have the child but with Timberlake being so certain “that he didn’t want to be a father,” the couple sought an abortion.

A traumatizing process, Britney Spears recalled the abortion procedure as one of the darkest days of her life, referring to it as “agonizing.” While she didn’t spell out exactly when the unwanted pregnancy and abortion took place, Spears and Justin Timberlake would separate for good in 2002, meaning that this event has been haunting the pop singer for over two decades.

“But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

Long before their faces appeared on billboards, with their voices and dance moves selling out stadiums around the world, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake got their start on The Mickey Mouse Club.

It was there that the duo would meet not only one another but also a slew of other familiar names including Ryan Gosling, Christina Aguilera, and Keri Russell. At that young age, crushes were shared between multiple members of the cast with the flame between Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears turning into a full-on fire in 1999.

With Britney Spears’ solo career launching to new heights and Justin Timberlake’s spot as one of the lead singers of NSYNC carrying him to superstardom, the pop duo were a power couple from the moment they announced their relationship.

Over the next few years, Spears and Timberlake would deliver some of the most iconic moments of 2000s fashion and appear alongside one another at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2001. It seemed like nothing could bring them down, but by 2002, the honeymoon was over and the pair had split.

“If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.”

Passage from the Britney Spears memoir

It seemed the entire world turned against Britney Spears in the days, weeks, and months following her breakup with Justin Timberlake as the latter released a semi-diss track, “Cry Me a River.” While he never fully came out and said it, Timberlake more than alluded to the fact that Spears had cheated on him, something that he’s now being forced to reckon with two decades in the future.

Both would go on to forge fresh relationships, with Spears marrying Kevin Federline and having two children, Jayden James Federline and Sean Preston Federline.

While the last two decades have been rather rough for Britney Spears, they seemed pretty easy on Justin Timberlake, who got married to actress Jessica Biel in 2012. However, the last few years have seen the public somewhat turn on Timberlake as they reexamine not only his relationship with Spears but also his hand in events, including the infamous Janet Jackson Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction.

Not the only one to release a memoir, Britney Spears joins ranks with Jada Pinkett Smith who will soon be dropping a book filled with moments in her life – including her secret separation from Will Smith. With such a life and legacy, fans will find much more than the truth about her relationship with Justin Timberlake in Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me, which is out on October 24.
