Sci-Fi Happy Meals That Are Too Good To Be True

fb share tweet share

BladeRunnerHow come adults don’t get meals that come with prizes? Some of my favorite rituals from childhood involved being elbow-deep in a box of cereal, feeling around for the prize, or dumping all the food out of my Happy Meal just so I could get to the toy. So how come we don’t get a grown-up equivalent? After-dinner mints and fortune cookies don’t count, damn it. I want to be able to finish my snazzy, five-star meal, and then have the waiter bring me out a Rocket Raccoon action figure on a silver platter. Sadly, I will probably never live in such a world, but at least pretending is a little bit easier thanks to these faux Happy Meals that were ripped right out of my Happy Place.

These awesome fake Happy Meals are the work of Los Angeles digital artist Newt Clements. (He mostly comes out at night. Mostly.) His Pinterest is full of a wide variety of crazy projects, but his Happy Meals collection is one of the most extensive. He’s got over 100 of the things by my count, and they’re all incredibly well done. Designing Happy Meal boxes to tie into Doctor Who, Aliens, or Escape from New York would have been worthy of a story in and of itself, but Clements goes the extra mile by imagining what toys might be included with each meal as well. And I don’t care what bounty McDonald’s has on offer, there’s no way it’s cooler than an action figure of Firefly’s River standing atop a pile of Reaver corpses.

Serenity Blue Sun Travel Posters Highlight Scenic Destinations Throughout The ‘Verse

fb share tweet share

SerenityValleyWith only 14 episodes produced, it’s understandable that Firefly fans would be eager to return to the ‘Verse in anyway they can. Sure, we got the movie, and now we’ve got the story continuing in the excellent Serenity: Leaves on the Wind comic, but with every year that passes, it seems less likely that we’ll get to see Nathan Fillion and the rest actually reunite on screen as the characters we love. Clearly, we’re not getting the Firefly we need here on Earth, so why not cut out the middle man and just book passage to one of the show’s scenic destinations directly?

Alas, I don’t actually have contact info for any interstellar travel agencies — if I did, you would currently be staring at a blank screen — but we do have some lovely faux travel posters that are suitable for framing and adorning the walls of your sci-fi-themed man cave. Or lady cave. Or whatever the female equivalent of “man cave” is that doesn’t automatically sound dirty. Where was I? Ah yes, an exciting vacation to exotic Sihnon!

Joss Whedon Resurrects Firefly’s Wash… Sort Of

If there was any question that Joss Whedon is not only a masterful storyteller, but also a ninja-level troll, that uncertainty can be put to rest now. See, last week somebody on Twitter asked Joss for more Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And lo, their prayers were answered! Sort of. He posted the following, along with the message, “your wish is my command here ya go.”

Happy Birthday To Firefly’s Morena Baccarin & Jewel Staite

fb share tweet share

InaraKayleeWe’ve got not one but two Firefly-related birthdays happening today. We’re lighting (space) candles on a pair of (space) cakes for Morena Baccarin and Jewel Staite, who turn 34 and 32 today, respectively. GFR wishes you ladies a spectacular day!

Morena Baccarin is beloved by Firefly fans for playing the elegant companion Inara, one of several female members of the Firefly crew with a particular talent for putting Mal in his place. (It didn’t hurt that he was usually crushing on her pretty hard.) While Firefly is definitely the science fiction role she’s best known for, it’s hardly the only one Baccarin has played. After her stint on Joss Whedon’s sci-fi Western, she appeared as Adria, leader of the armies of the Ori, in Stargate SG-1 and the Stargate: The Ark of Truth TV movie. She was the deceptively beautiful leader of the Visitors in ABC’s V reboot, and she even voiced Black Canary in the Justice League cartoons. More recently, she played Jessica Brody, wife of the conflicted and traitorous Nicolas Brody on Showtime’s Homeland, and did further voice work as Talia al Ghul in the Son of Batman animated movie. We’ll always miss her love/hate banter with Mal the most…

Firefly Cast Reunites In Dallas, Nathan Fillion Nearly Gets Squished

SerenityThe cast of Firefly reunited on stage at Fan Expo Dallas in Texas over the weekend, gathering in front of a standing-room-only crowd inside the spacious Dallas convention center. Fans had come to see the stars of a show that’s become one of the most beloved cult classics in science fiction or TV history, one that inspires devotion and loyalty like no other. But, of all the things those fans came to see, I don’t think anyone’s list would have included, “Watch Nathan Fillion get killed by a collapsing backdrop.”

Fillion, who played Malcolm Reynolds in Joss Whedon’s Firefly and the Serenity movie, was just about to take the stage when the large cloth and metal backdrop behind the stage began to topple, earning gasps from the audience. He was okay, but a few minutes later, the backdrop on the other side of the stage collapsed toward the audience. Thankfully no one was hurt, but I know I wasn’t the only one watching the backdrop with a nervous eye for the rest of the panel.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-Rays And Firefly Comics Are On Sale Today

fb share tweet share

EncounterAtFairpoint1It’s a rough time to be a long-time Star Trek fan. For many who cut their teeth on the original movies and the various TV incarnations over the years, J.J. Abrams’ rebooted movie universe is at best a pale imitation and at worst an outright insult (to be fair, the critics generally don’t agree with that sentiment). So if you’re a die-hard Trekker longing for the good old days, it might be time to click over to Amazon, because they’ve got a great deal going on for Blu-ray copies of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s first five seasons.

The Star Trek season sets have typically been a bit pricy, with the Next Gen Blu-rays listing for a whopping $129.99. That’s enough to put a dent in a man’s wallet even if you’re from a future that doesn’t use money. Thankfully Amazon has just given you a reason to raid the savings account, as all five Next Gen Blu-ray sets are going for a mere $45.99 today — that’s 65% off MSRP, and it means you can get all five sets for a little over $200. Not cheap, but certainly a lot cheaper than you could otherwise get your hands on new copies.
