Eight Scary Slices Of Sci-Fi You Might Not Have Seen

fb share tweet share

It’s Halloween, kids. Or adults. And pantomime horses. Today is the greatest holiday of the year, and we’re willing to let you get on with your festivities as you do, but we’re just letting you know about some currently streaming below-the-radar sci-fi movies that will bring the terror almost as much as that haunted house down the block that’s actually just a garage filled with carbon monoxide. That’s why trick-or-treating never lasts that long in this neighborhood.

So without further a-boo, here are eight under-seen flicks you can find and watch right now. If you da…oh, you do dare? Okay, then.

europa reportEuropa Report (Netflix Instant)
People bitch a lot about the found-footage subgenre, and for good reason, but low budgets do not always equal low intelligence. Sebastián Cordero’s Europa Report is a testament to that, sending a crew of six people out to Jupiter’s most promising-for-mankind moon to see if it can sustain life. Prepare yourself for a slow burn of a space exploration film that gets to that Upworthy point where “what happens next may shock you.” Is anything scarier than a Dan Fogler-as-a-genius cameo? Maybe, maybe not.

Cross The Streams: Europa Report, Robot & Frank, And The Host All Hit Streaming This Week

Hope everyone had a great Veterans Day, and even if you don’t serve, we still hope you had a good day since we’re all veterans at this game called life. If everyone isn’t too busy keeping our country safe for the next week, there are more than enough streaming entertainment choices to keep you busy. As a plus, most of them are new…ish!

europa reportEuropa Report (Netflix Instant)
Sebastián Cordero’s low-budget mock doc Europa Report, which hit theaters earlier this year, dealt with unfair comparison to the borefest that is Apollo 18, but it doesn’t take long for the film to differentiate itself, filling its short runtime with a smart, tense look at exploration and humanity. A team of scientists on a mission to Jupiter’s most promising moon Europa, hunt for what rests beneath its giant ice sheets. A winning appearance from Sharlto Copley, and interesting, though vague, auxiliary characters compliment the brainy sci-fi. Not even a weird cameo from Dan Fogler can pull this one down. There’s no doubt Gravity has the advantage when it comes to CGI, but Europa Report one has my vote for the most interesting space-based thriller of the year.

Movie Review: The Host Is A Dull Invasion

fb share tweet share

What is there to say about Andrew Niccol’s The Host? The film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novel of the same name is positioned to be as successful as the Twilight film series, which the author also wrote and produced. While The Host sports an all-star cast featuring Saoirse Ronan (Hanna), Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), and William Hurt (A History of Violence), it suffers from self-seriousness, a lack of personality or humor, and bland tonal trappings that make Twilight look like The Avengers, in terms of excitement and thrills.

The Host’s Latest Trailer Reveals Heavy Action And A Sappy Love Story

On the surface, The Host might look like another silly teenage love story from Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, but there might be something more to this sci-fi film. The director, Andrew Niccol, has had plenty of experience with science fiction in the past, some good Gattaca), and some not so good (In Time). The film’s cast is top tier, led by Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) and joined by Diane Kruger, Emily Browning, and William Hurt. So what could go wrong? With only a week before the film hits theaters, Open Road Films has released a new trailer for The Host.

Best known for her Twilight novels, author Stephenie Meyers is about to return to the big screen with her latest teen-centric story, Andrew Niccol’s (Gattaca) adaptation of her book The Host. Set in the near future, an alien race called Souls have invaded and taken over the bodies of almost all of humanity. Open Road has released three new clips in advance of the March 29th release, and they offer a glimpse into the personality and story of the main character, Melanie Stryder (Saoirse Ronan).
