Live-Action Jetsons Movie Gets New Writers

It’s kind of surprising that they haven’t made a Jetsons movie yet, especially given how much effects technology has advanced over the past 20 years or so. It’s been rumored off and on for years now, under various creative teams, but it’s never really made much progress. Lately that seems to have changed, with a live-action version gearing up and rumored to involve, of all people, Kanye West. Now the Jetsons script is getting a rewrite by a pair of screenwriters best known for writing about Chewbacca.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. has hired screenwriters Van Robichaux and Evan Susser to do a rewrite pass on the latest Jetsons script, previously worked on by Adam F. Goldberg (Fanboys). Their most notable credit was penning a screenplay called Chewie, which tells the story behind the making of the original Star Wars film, from the viewpoint of Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew. It earned some buzz late last year when it made the Black List, an annual list of the best unproduced screenplays, as voted on by film execs. Past Black List scripts have become acclaimed films such as The King’s Speech, the Hunger Games adaptation, and I’m With Cancer, which became 50/50.

That’s all well and good, but is anybody out there actually looking forward to a Jetsons movie? I understand why Hollywood wants to make it, since it’s an existing property that people have heard of, and God knows they’ve dipped into shallower wells. Robichaux and Susser’s Chewie script is funny, clever, and surprisingly sweet, so they’ve definitely got talent. It just remains to be seen if they can figure out how to pen a Jetsons movie that’s worth anybody’s time.
