The only Paul W.S. Anderson movie that could enter the conversation of “modern genre classics,” even though it wouldn’t make the cut in the end. Perhaps if Anderson was allowed to release an unrated cut… But even as a victim of studio butchering and overall hamminess, this is still one hell of a wicked descent into space horror. It doesn’t feel particularly dated, and remains just as thought-provoking (about specific concepts, not the movie as a whole necessarily), as no space crews have actually captured a gateway into Hell just yet. Sam Neill stepped right out of a Clive Barker novel and delivered one of the most bizarre performances in a career full of them. Good stuff.

Ground Control to major streamers, we are a go. There’s no reason to cancel all of your Maypole parties this week, as this isn’t the most prolific time for streaming releases. Nothing wildly popular here, but we’ve got a few things that have particularly strong fanbases, so here’s hoping there’s something you guys like.

When this Zak Penn and Michael Karnow-created superpowers drama first hit Syfy, it was discarded by many as just a rip-off of NBC’s Heroes, though the fact that it wasn’t Heroes should have brought viewers in droves. It didn’t take long for this show’s decent blending of character drama with powers and special effects to catch on, and the show avoided its predicted early cancellation…only to get cancelled later on, but still. Dr. Lee Rosen (David Straithaim) leads a team of five hero types with interesting abilities who fight crimes committed by Alphas of the villainous variety. The show also stars Ryan Cartwright, Warren Christie, Malik Yoba, Laura Mennell, Erin Way, and Azita Ghanizada. All 24 episodes are here for you to dive into, so get started. Don’t make me get Nina to tell you to do it.

SyFy Cancels Alphas After Two Seasons

fb share tweet share

AlphasBad news for fans of the TV series Alphas, the SyFy channel canceled the super powered crime-solving series after two seasons of extraordinary storytelling with super low ratings. The announcement came yesterday; months after SyFy aired the season two finale in October.

The TV series first aired during the summer of 2011 to strong ratings but as the series progressed, the ratings dwindled as each new episode aired. It was on the cusp of cancelation during its first season but SyFy renewed it for a second season because of the TV series’ large and vocal fan base. The final death nail came when SyFy acquired new properties including Ron D. Moore’s Helix and the multi-platform alien centric Defiance to finally replace it.
