You Can Help Pacific Rim In A Monster Sized Clean Up Effort

Next week, when giant monsters collide with massive robots in director Guillermo del Toro’s sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim, they’re going to create quite a mess. Buildings will be toppled, cities will be leveled, and Kaiju poop will litter the streets. Someone is going to have to clean it all up. And you may be able to pitch in.
To celebrate the July 12 release, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures teaming up with local parks and environmental groups to organize a large-scale beach clean up in eight major metropolitan areas. Oddly enough, all of them are on the West Coast of the US and Canada, or Hawaii, you know, on the Pacific Rim. Weird. I wonder if the Asylum’s knock off, Atlantic Rim, is doing the same thing on the East Coast.
The event takes place on the morning of Thursday, July 11, so don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to make it to midnight screenings. Here are the locations and times:
Honolulu – Pounders Beach (in Laie) from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Los Angeles – Santa Monica Pier (PCH & Colorado Ave.) from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Orange County – Huntington State Beach (PCH & Brookhurst St.) from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
San Diego – Mission Beach (starting at the Wave House) from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
San Francisco – Ocean Beach (Fulton St and JFK Drive) from 12:30 PM – 2:30 PM
Santa Barbara – East Beach (Stearn’s Wharf/ Mission Creek Lagoon) from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Seattle – Alki Beach (The Bathhouse at Alki Beach) from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Vancouver – Kitsilano Beach (Park Entrance at Arbutus and Cornwall Ave)
from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM
And if doing a good deed for your town isn’t enough incentive, the studio is sweetening the pot. Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, and Charlie Day, have taped TV and radio PSAs to encourage you along the way and convince people to show up. Then there are the prizes. You have to love free stuff, don’t you? The first 100 volunteers at each site will receive two free tickets to a 3D screening of Pacific Rim, as well as an exclusive commemorative T-shirt. In keeping with the theme of the day, the shirts are made out of all recycled materials.
Granted, this is going to be an easier clean up than the one faced by the characters in Pacific Rim. I’m not glued to news channels by any means, but I’m pretty sure we haven’t had to deal with giant monsters, like the Kaiju, emerging from the depths of the ocean, at least not yet. When we do—I’m sure it’s just a matter of time—hopefully we’ll also have big ass mechs to pilot into battle. All you’ll have to pick up on July 11 is your run of the mill litter and trash, the usual mess you find at a public beach in the middle of the summer season. Maybe you’ll find a used hypodermic needle just to keep things interesting.
Even though the Jaegers level the playing field to a degree, the war against the Kaiju is one the human race is gradually losing. As we approach the end, a washed up pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested rookie (Rinko Kikuchi), working together to control a legendary, but out of date Jaeger, may be our last chance. Will they be able to save the day? We’ll have to wait until next week to see.
