At this point in the game, you know very well that you have to stick around after the credits of any movie based on a Marvel property. Or any movie based on any comic, for that matter. Not to mention most horror, action, sci-fi, and pretty much anything that isn’t a period drama or a romantic comedy. It’s exhausting. You just want to leave the theater and go home, but you and a handful of other nerds sit there anyway, paralyzed by the fear that you might miss out on something magical.
You can bet that Marvel’s upcoming Iron Man 3 is going to follow this same path—as the first two have—and the reckless, unsubstantiated rumor of the day has it that there might be a bit of sci-fi twist to these proceedings.
Latino Review reports that, at the end of Iron Man 3, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) goes into deep space and hooks up with none other than the Guardians of the Galaxy. This news is based on a leaked image of a toy that features Iron Man’s “Deep Space Suit,” and also on an unnamed source.
As wacky as this rumor sounds, LR is usually a pretty reliable, and it makes a certain amount of sense. Guardians of the Galaxy is a relatively unknown piece of the Marvel universe, at least for mainstream audiences, so it would certainly be in the studio’s best interest to link it to one of their most established, not to mention most massively successful, franchises.
Scheduled for an August 2014 release, and directed by James Gunn, Guardians is set in deep space and follows the adventures of a team of space heroes including Star Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, and Gamora.
So, do you think this is true? Is this enough to get you to sit through an extended credits sequence? Granted, it never says anywhere in the report that this is specifically about the post-credits scene. That’s an assumption I made, perhaps one that will come back to bite me on the ass. We’ll just have to wait and see.
