Emma Stone Wants To Be Called Her Real Name
The talented Emma Stone has built an amazing acting career out of playing girl-next-door style characters. Of course, you probably know the real name of the actual girl (or boy) next door to you, but most people can’t say the same about the actor. Recently, Emma Stone reminded all of us that her real name is actually “Emily Stone” and she’d rather go by that name.
Emily Not Emma
If she’d rather be called Emily, then why does the popular actor go by Emma Stone instead? One reason for this stretches back to her childhood when she was a superfan of The Spice Girls. She was particularly a fan of Baby Spice, and since the singer’s real name is Emma Burton, the future actor told her second-grade teacher to call her by the name “Emma” instead of “Emily.”
Choosing A Unique Name
As she got older, this Spice Girls fangirl decided to try her luck as an actor in Hollywood.
As you probably know, actors have to choose a unique name to go by as part of their SAG-AFTRA membership. She quickly found out that the name “Emily Stone” had previously been taken, so she decided to go by her preferred childhood nickname of Emma Stone.
Different In Her Private Life
This is the name by which the actor has become wealthy and famous, but it seems like she wants to keep that name separate from her personal life.
She has said that once she gets to know “people that I work with” a bit better, she has them call her Emily. Meanwhile, Emma Stone remained her preferred identity as she grew her career with one killer performance after another.
Not That Uncommon In Hollywood
Wanting to go by different names with different groups isn’t that uncommon, but it does lead to the obvious question: if she has been fine being Emma Stone in public and Emily Stone behind closed doors, why is she now publicly asking the world to call her Emma?
Weirdly enough, it all came out in an earlier interview where the star was asked if she planned to correct a fan who had called her “Emily Stone.” Instead of being offended, the actor said that “That would be so nice” and “I would like to be Emily.”
Maybe Just Em?
That led to an admission that “Then I freaked out a couple of years ago,” deciding she would tell her costars–and the world–to “just call me Emily.”
Apparently, one of the actors she works with have found an interesting compromise.
Emma Stone’s The Curse costar, Nathan Fielder, calls her “Em:” this is “easier,” she says, and we suspect it’s easier for Fielder, too, since he is just shortening the name “Emma” instead of calling her something different altogether.
Emma Stone’s Future
In case you’re wondering, Emma Stone never stopped being a Spice Girls fan, and she plans on checking them out on tour if she gets half a chance.
We can’t blame her for nostalgia…if Marvel fans get to constantly relive our childhood in movies on the big screen, she should certainly get to relive hers at a concert.
Speaking of Marvel, it may be good that the Easy A star is leaning into black comedies like The Curse instead of trying to be part of the MCU…these days, superhero fatigue has ensured that capes are the real scarlet letter at the box office.
