fb share tweet share

upfronts-2014The five major broadcast networks are set to deliver their “upfronts” in New York this week, an annual event where the networks get to show off their new fall and mid-season series to advertisers and press. We get to find out which shows will survive another season, which won’t, and what new things we’ll be watching later this year. And because we here at GFR love making your life easier, we’ve broken down the genre-related canceled/renewed/brand new announcements by network. If you need a sign to protest the death of Almost Human, you can have some of our posterboard.

While GFR’s primary focus is on science fiction, we’re including news about a few noteworthy shows that don’t fit within that genre, but which will likely be of interest to many of you. Let’s get to it!

Sleepy Hollow Gives Us A First Look At John Noble’s Role

fb share tweet share

We recently learned that Fringe alum John Noble would appear on the inaugural season of Fox’s gothic supernatural hit Sleepy Hollow. Now fans that miss the hell out of the Dr. Walter Bishop character can get their first glimpse at the Australian born actor playing a character called the Sin Eater. We heard that Noble was to have a “major recurring role” that would take place later on in the season of the pseudo-historical drama, and from the look of this promo video for the next episode, this arc will begin in three weeks time.

A Sin Eater is generally a person who takes on the misdeeds of others, thus absolving them in a manner of speaking. This usually involves a newly dead person, and the eating of sins allows them to remain at peace in the afterlife. Whether this holds true for Sleepy Hollow, and what this means for the characters, remains to be seen, but from the look of things, whatever the results, Ichabod Crane (Tom Misson) will bear the brunt of it, for good or ill. This does seem to bring up the idea that there is a way to break the bond between the former Revolutionary War soldier and the headless horseman—the two became accidental blood brothers way back when—so we’ll get to see how that plays out.

Fringe’s John Noble Will Battle The Headless Horseman On Sleepy Hollow

Walter BishopWe miss Fringe and we’re always on the lookout for news from the former cast members. Now it looks like star John Noble is joining the cast of Fox’s new supernatural pseudo-historical drama Sleepy Hollow. We’re not talking about a guest spot either, he’s going have a “major recurring role” and be part of a large story arc that occurs later in the first season.

This reunites Noble with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who created both Sleepy Hollow and Fringe. Noble played Dr. Walter Bishop on Fox’s embattled sci-fi police procedural, a brilliant but eccentric scientist who has a kind heart, but who was responsible for things like inadvertently tearing holes in multiple universes. While he may have been on the hook for horrible, horrible things happening to multiple worlds, Walter was the heart and soul of the show, the gooey emotional center of the complex narrative.

Almost HumanWhen the 2013-2014 television season kicks off this fall, sci-fi fans will have a number of new options to comb through. Two of the more interesting ones come courtesy of Fox. After all, who besides Fox would air the futuristic cop show Almost Human, and the time traveling historical fiction joint Sleepy Hollow. We’ve seen bits and pieces from both shows, and now we have official cast photos from each.

Set 35 years in the from now, Almost Human follows a cop named John Kennex, played by Karl Urban. In this particular iteration of the future, crime has gotten so out of hand that the police force issues every officer a robotic partner. Because he’s a rebel who plays by his own rules, Kennex takes issue with his new automated sidekick, Dorian (Michael Ealy). But that’s too bad for him, because the duo will have to form an uneasy trust as they uncover a vast, spiraling conspiracy.

Ichabod Crane Will Travel Through Time In Fox’s Sleepy Hollow Pilot

Fox has commissioned a pilot based on the classic Washington Irving short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” cleverly titled Sleepy Hollow. That sounds relatively straightforward, right? You have Ichabod Crane, the Headless Horseman, and a gothic, macabre sensibility. Here is the kicker: Ichabod Crane is going to travel through time. That’s one hell of a wrinkle to the time-tested story.
