Ryan Reynolds’ Sci-Fi Thriller Selfless Gets A Winter 2015 Release Date

Ryan Reynolds as Green LanternActor Ryan Reynolds didn’t have a very good 2013. After two of his movies bombed terribly on the same weekend this past summer — Turbo from DreamWorks Animation and the afterlife cop comedy R.I.P.D. — the 37-year-old actor desperately needs a hit on his hands. It seems like Reynolds’ career never recovered from the Green Lantern. One of the next films he’s got in the gate is the science fiction thriller Selfless, which was originally positioned for some after-summer success in 2014, but now has shifted to a winter 2015 release.

As reported by Deadline, after FilmDistrict and Focus Features’ merger a few months ago, a few FilmDistrict titles such as Selfless, Insidious: Chapter 3, and Paul W.S. Anderson’s Pompeii have been somewhat lost in the shuffle with pushed release dates. Selfless was originally going to open wide in September 2014, but now will hit theaters on February 27, 2015. At the moment, Selfless has the whole weekend to itself without any competition from other movie releases, as opposed to the more fierce competition its fall slot would have faced.

Tarsem Singh’s New Science Fiction Project Panopticon Announced

Tarsem SinghTarsem Singh has always been one of those directors who delivers films that are visually stunning but dull. Tarsem has seen some success with films like The Fall and Mirror, Mirror, but overall his films are more eye candy than substance. He showed a lot of promise with his feature film debut The Cell, starring Jennifer Lopez and Vince Vaughn, but he just seems to be a director who’s better suited as an art director or cinematographer. Now Singh is going back to science fiction, after a brief stint with fantasy, with the film The Panopticon.

According to The Wrap, Tarsem Singh has signed on for the new film after his current science fiction film, Selfless starring Ryan Reynolds, wraps. The Panopticon is a sci-fi thriller from screenwriter Craig Rosenberg (The Uninvited) and producer Andrew Lazar (Jonah Hex). The Panopticon follows a man who receives a mysterious package with a pre-recorded message from himself inside. The message is a warning that the world will end if he doesn’t act quickly to stop the destruction.

Ryan Reynolds Sci-Fi Thriller Selfless Hits Theaters Next Fall

rrThis website doesn’t seem like it attracts the kind of crowd that went apeshit for last year’s Snow White adaptation Mirror Mirror, but its director, Tarsem Singh, has created some of the most gorgeous visuals in cinema with movies such as The Fall, Immortals and The Cell. Again, I’m only talking about the visuals here, as the scripts for the films he directs tend to look settled for.

But he’s coming into the science fiction genre with his next film, Selfless, and now we know when we can expect to see some of Tarsem’s ghoulishly haunting imagery. The film has landed September 26, 2014 as its release date. By keeping it that far out, it either means the film will utilize a host of digitally modified imagery, or it isn’t getting filmed for a while yet. This is the same date that production company Laika (ParaNorman) will be releasing their next stop-motion animation feature, The Boxtrolls, an adaptation of Alan Snow’s Here Be Monsters!. At this point, I’m much more interested in Laika’s work, but I’m willing to keep an open mind.
