This Chappie TV Spot Favors Action Over Emotion

We’re still a few months out, but Sony Pictures picked this week to kick up the marketing campaign for Chappie, the latest from District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp. We’ve seen a domestic trailer, an international trailer, and now a new TV spot. And the people behind the project are talking, too, shedding light on the process and story.

This new commercial definitely plays up the action side of the movie, and if you’ve seen any of Blomkamp’s other films, you know that’s one of his strong points. It does, however, skip over what we expect to be the more central concerns of the film, the story and emotional component. Chappie is just like any other child, curious, eager to learn and be loved, the only difference is, he’s also a robot. The first of his kind that can think and feel for himself, he faces all kinds of prejudice and obstacles, including fighting that huge, ED-209 looking robot. That’s going to be awesome on the big screen.

This UK Chappie Trailer Show That The World Is Scared Of A Teenage Robot

Just the other day, we got our best look yet at Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming robotic actioner Chappie in the form of an in depth trailer from Sony Pictures. It provided a wider view of the world of the film, as well as a more in depth look at the plot, and hot on the heels of that reveal comes this new trailer from the U.K.

Released by Yahoo U.K., this video hits many of the same notes as the previous offering, though there is a ton of new footage that we hadn’t seen yet. Chappie’s creator, Deon Wilson (Dev Patel), wants to make a machine that can think and feel, so of course someone finds a way to weaponize his invention, establishing a robotic police force. On the other side is Vincent Moore (Hugh Jackman and his mullet), a rival inventor and former soldier. He thinks artificial intelligence is too unpredictable, so his entry into these sweepstakes is something more akin to a drone, which looks conspicuously like ED-209 from RoboCop. (As has been pointed out repeatedly, there are also numerous similarities with Short Circuit.)

Get Your First Look At AMC’s Creepy Robot Drama Humans Here

HumansAMC currently rules the horror TV landscape, at least popularity wise, with their mega hit zombie drama The Walking Dead. And while they’ve tackled weighty fare with Breaking Bad, the western with Hell On Wheels, and the police procedural with Low Winter Sun, they’ve yet to dive full on into science fiction. That’s changing with their upcoming Humans, and now we have a new look at the series.

This new image shows actress Gemma Chan, who plays a “Synth,” as their called (it sounds like a very derogatory term), named Anita. Set in an alternate reality that parallels our own, in Humans these robotic servants—think super fancy Rosie from The Jetsons—have become the must-have status symbol for any family on the rise. One suburban family reaches beyond their budget and means to purchase their very own Synth, hoping it will change their life. And it does, just not for the better. When they buy a refurbished model, they discover that living with a machine has “far-reaching and chilling consequences.”

Zombies Vs. Robots Just Hired This Director To Adapt The IDW Comic Series

zombies vs robotsIt’s been so long since we’ve heard about this one that we forgot it was even happening, but the long gestating adaptation of IDW comics’ Zombies vs. Robots is apparently still in the works. Now, almost four full years after Sony Pictures first picked up the rights, they’ve gone and hired Andrew Adamson to direct the picture, which is still called Inherit the Earth.

Variety reports that The Chronicles of Narnia (both The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian), Shrek, and Shrek 2 director has been tapped to helm the film version of the comic series from creators Ashley Wood and Chris Ryall. Though it’s been so long since we’ve heard a damn squeak from this, it sounds like it is still very much the same creative team that was in place way back when.

Summer Glau’s New Best Friend Is This Giant Robot In Webseries Jeff 1000

Summer Glau may not be a household name, but within a certain segment of the population, she’s a goddamned superstar. You love her, and you’ll always love her because she was in Firefly, not to mention the underappreciated Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She may have been a robot in that second show, but now in the webseries Jeff 1000 she’s become best buds with a 10-foot-tall, not-quite-killer mechanoid.

Watch This Ex Machina Featurette Discuss What It Means To Be Human

Alex Garland has an extensive history as a screenwriter, crafting scripts for the likes of Sunshine, 28 Days Later, and Dredd, but his directorial debut, the robotics thriller Ex Machina, looks as promising as any of those. Though it won’t premiere in the U.S. for a few more months, a U.K. release waits just around the corner next month, and we reap the benefit of all the advance hype, including this new featurette, “When Humans Become Gods.”

Ex Machina revolves around Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at a Google-like internet search company. When he wins a chance to spend some time at the isolated mountain retreat of the company’s CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), he thinks they’re going to hang out, bond, and maybe talk about a promotion. As it turns out, however, Caleb has been recruited to be the human component in a Turing Test, designed to evaluate the consciousness of Nathan’s latest invention, an artificially intelligent robot named Ava (Alicia Vikander), who is much more than meets the eye.
