The cast for the upcoming film adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s classic series Ender’s Game is really filling out. They’ve got a gruff sci-fi icon (Harrison Ford) for Battle School’s Colonel Hyum Graff. The kids of the story are being anchored by three extremely talented young actors and actresses in the roles of Ender (Asa Butterfield), Valentine (Abigail Breslin), and Petra (Hailee Steinfeld). They’ve even snagged an Academy Award-winning knight Sir Ben Kingsley) for Mazer Rackham. There’s yet another bit of casting news that’s just come out: Viola Davis is joining the film.

Variety reports that Davis has been cast as a “military psychologist who oversees the emotional welfare of young trainees” at the Battle School, where talented young people in Ender’s Game‘s world are recruited to train for battle against a looming invasion by an insect-like alien species. The character is also responsible for designing the games the trainees are put through to test their mettle and fitness for command. Both of these responsibilities would put Davis’s character in close contact not only with the talented young actors starring in the film, but also Ford and Kingsley. I, for one, look forward to the verbal sparring matches that will undoubtedly ensue.

Harrison Ford Confirmed As Graff For Ender’s Game Movie, Bean Cast

We heard rumors a few weeks ago that Harrison Ford was being considered to play the pivotal role of Colonel Hyram Graff in director Gavin Hood’s upcoming adaptation of Ender’s Game. Now they’ve stopped considering him and have actually hired him. It’s official: Harrison Ford is playing Graff in Ender.

The news comes from Variety where they say Abigail Breslin and Hailee Steinfeld have also been signed along with lesser known youngsters Aramis Knight, Moises Arias, Jimmy “Jax” Pinchak, Suraj Parthasarathy, Conor Carroll and Khylin Rhambo.

Abigail Breslin will play Valentine Wiggun, Ender’s older sister and his emotional center. Hailee Steinfeld is Petra Arkanian, one of the most trusted members of Ender’s jeesh (his platoon) at Battle School. And of course Harrison Ford’s Colonel Graff is kind of like Battle School’s headmaster. He recruits the students and oversees everything that happens there.

Perhaps even more important than any of those big name casting items, though, is that they’ve hired someone to play Bean. Bean is the only student at Battle School who may be clearly smarter than Ender (being played by Hugo’s Asa Butterfield), and he’s also the smallest kid there. Due to some strange genetics, he’s abnormally small for his age. Casting the most brilliant, pint-sized kid in the universe has to be pretty challenging and they’ve gone with relative unknown Aramis Knight to play him.

Ender’s Game Movie Adds Andrew’s Bully

The Ender’s Game movie has just cast a small, but pivotal role. 17-year-old Brendan Meyer has been hired to play Stilson in the film, according to THR.

Stilson is a bully who torments Ender in the early days before he’s shipped off to Battle School. If you’ve read the book you know he only gets a few pages in the story, and will subsequently likely get only a few minutes on screen in the film, but they’re incredibly pivotal minutes which shape the person Ender Wiggin becomes in the future.

Meyer’s probably best known for playing the lead in the Disney TV series Mr. Young. His last feature film was a small part in 2010’s Tooth Fairy, a movie probably best forgotten.

Hailee Steinfeld May Play Petra Arkanian In Ender’s Game Movie

I’m still not sure if I should be excited about Gavin Hood’s upcoming adaptation of Ender’s Game. There’s a lot to worry about, but with Asa Butterfield being offered the titular role it’s easier to believe the money behind the film knows that getting big names to play the leads is not the most important consideration.

We recently heard that Harrison Ford is a top contender for Graff. Variety reports that True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld is being offered the role of Petra. Considering what a sisterly type of character she is I wonder how much of Valentine, Ender’s actual sister in the book, will be rolled into Petra to keep the film’s length tolerable. She teaches Ender a lot about the Battle School and how the battles work, including how to shoot. It would be easy to roll that in with a sibling style relationship as well.
