BSG’s Bear McCreary Joins Farscape Creator’s New Syfy Show As Music Supervisor

Is the upcoming Syfy show Defiance on your radar? If not, it should be, because it’s the creation of Rockne O’Bannon, the man who gave us one of the greatest, and most underrated, science fiction shows of all time in the form of Farscape. Since that show wrapped up with the Peacekeeper Wars miniseries in 2004, O’Bannon served as consulting producer on ABC’s V remake, but we haven’t seen any new shows actually created by the man. Thankfully that’s changing with Defiance, a project that just became even more exciting thanks to the announcement that Battlestar Galactica/The Walking Dead composer Bear McCreary will serve as the show’s music supervisor.

The word came via a tweet from Syfy senior executive Craig Engler, who didn’t provide any more details beyond McCreary’s involvement. Defiance is set in the near future, after a “universal war” has ravaged the Earth. The show follows a group of survivors as they attempt to build a new society in the aftermath. Game producer Trion Worlds are working in partnership with the show to produce a multiplatform shooter MMO that will connect to the show and debut at the same time. Supposedly the show and game will interact in various ways, forming “a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story.”

SyFy Confirms Farscape Creator’s New Show For 2013

The SyFy Channel seems to be going strong since changing its name from Sci-Fi to allow them more wiggle room to stop making things that are science fiction. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that when they announced their new slate of original programming, science fiction has very little to do with it.

The good news here is that SyFy is planning to make at least one science fiction series. In fact it’s the only new scripted series slated to appear on the network in the next couple of years. The show is called Defiance and the network has confirmed that it will premiere some time in 2013. Here’s how they describe it:

Defiance is in collaboration with Trion Worlds, with the Syfy series and Trion’s multi-platform shooter MMO poised to debut simultaneously. The series stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Fionnula Flanagan, Mia Kirshner and Oscar-nominee Graham Greene. Set in the near future, Defiance introduces a completely transformed planet Earth, inhabited by the survivors of a universal war. Forced to co-habitate, the disparate group struggles to build a new society among the devastation. The dramatic tapestry of the series and the intense action of the game will exist in a single universe where their respective narratives will inform one another and evolve together into one overall story. Defiance is directed by Scott Stewart (Legion, Priest) and written/executive produced by Rockne O’Bannon (Farscape), Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica, Hellcats) and Michael Taylor (Battlestar Galactica). Kevin Murphy serves as showrunner. Defiance is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

Farscape’s Creator Producing A Post-Apocalyptic Riff On Alien Nation For Julie Benz

A couple of years ago the SyFy channel changed it’s name from Sci-Fi in order to spend less time airing actual science fiction programming and more time broadcasting wrestling and ghost hunting shows. Lately there’ve been rumors of new science fiction appearing on the channel though. Maybe they’re starting to regret it?

The latest actual science fiction addition to the channel is a new show called Defiance. It’s currently in development with intent to air it on the SyFy channel and it’ll star total babe Julie Benz. The plot of Defiance sounds a lot like a post-apocalyptic Alien Nation and involves a future planet Earth ravaged by decades of war and then revitalized by alien terraforming machines. In that environment humans and aliens must learn to live and work together.

Deadline says Benz will play the idealistic new mayor of a mining boomtown, struggling to keep the peace. Grant Bowler will star in the series as a law-keeper named Jeb Nolan.
