New After Earth Promo Images

I’ve gone over it in my head again and again, and I can’t think of what new piece of information about After Earth would make me want to drop everything I was doing to go see it. It’s a sci-fi apocalyptic tale. I like that. It’s got a small cast secluded in a new world with unknown enemies. I like that. I like Will Smith and have no problems with Jaden Smith yet, and Isabelle Fuhrman is looking like she’ll have a career I’ll be pleased to follow. But it’s a CGI extravaganza from M. Night Shyamalan and two co-screenwriters (says IMDB), which negates anything positive I may have felt.

So the new pieces of information currently not changing my mind about anything are two promo images released for the film, due out June 7, 2013. The first something of a majestic pose from Jaden Smith, presumably wearing the uniform that changes him into the Wile E. Coyote bat man we see in the trailer. And everything is forest green behind him, so it could almost be a Hunger Games promo image. Hey, Fuhrman was in that!

M. Night Shyamalan has been losing faith with audiences since Lady In The Water in 2006. Each movie he has released – The Happening and The Last Airbender – has been increasingly terrible. Interest was piqued when word got out that his next film would star Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith. That movie, After Earth, will see the father and son team in a post-apocalyptic world where nature evolved to kill humans. Check out the trailer below…

Sony has since released a video illustrating the history of Earth in a Facebook Timeline feed. The video introduces us to the world of After Earth by recounting the history of the Raige family, a family of prominent scientist who developed Lightstream Technology in 1908, which leads to humanity’s mass exodus to the distant planet Nova Prime in 2066. Before leaving Earth, colonist placed perimeter beacons that orbit Earth to warn those who might come across the deserted planet.

M. Night Shyalaman’s After Earth Plot Synopsis Has Humanity Living On An Alien Planet

While M. Night Shyamalan has squandered the good will he built with his first few films, Signs is still one of the most fascinating alien invasion efforts made in the last 10 years. On the other hand Night’s last film, The Last Airbender, was named one of the worst movies of 2010. But despite is reputation of delivering beautiful films with very little and almost laughable substance; Shyamalan has still managed to gain excitement for his new film After Earth.

After Earth will feature Will Smith, his son Jayden and will mark as Shyamalan’s return to the science fiction genre. Sony will be bringing the sci-fi film to Comic-Con this year, along with a panel featuring the screenwriter Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) and cinematographer Peter Suschitzky (The Empire Strikes Back) to talk about the film with fans. Sony has also released the official synopsis of After Earth in anticipation of the Comic-Con panel on July 14th. Here it is…

In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

Director M. Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi efforts have been, let’s say mixed, that’s diplomatic. Despite the critical walloping delivered to his last few films—like 2010’s The Last Airbender, and 2008’s The Happening—that’s not stopping big name Hollywood talent from lining up to work with him. Case in point his latest effort, the sci-fi actioner After Earth, which stars not one, but two members of the Smith clan: Will and Jaden. Now we have quick glimpse at the promotional material for the film.
