Did you know that M. Knight Shymalan is set to direct a sci-fi flick called 1000 A.E. for Columbia Pictures? Neither did I. Apparently, the futuristic action adventure is going to star Will and Jaden Smith and is slated to hit theaters on June 7, 2013. Now it looks like the film might be gaining a couple of additional cast members in the form of Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo.
Sci-fi fans probably know Kravitz as the insect-winged Angel Salvadore from X-Men: First Class, but she was also bestowed a rising star award by the Bahamas International Film Festival and stars in the drama Yelling to the Sky. Kravitz is also supposed to be shooting the next installment of the Mad Max franchise next year. Okonedo has appeared in such heavy hitters as Hotel Rwanda and The Secret Life of Bees, but isn’t exactly a sci-fi virgin herself. She played Liz 10 in Doctor Who.
1000 A.E. was co-written by Shymalan and Gary Whitta, screenwriter of The Book of Eli. It takes place in a dystopic future where Earth is too inhospitable for humans to continue living on. Will and Jaden will play the father and son heroes of the film who don’t have the grandest of relationships. The plot description on BET says that Jaden’s character is “considered a failure as a warrior” and Collider describes Will’s character as the “estranged father”. When the two crash-land on Earth, it is up to the son to save them. Kravitz would play Will’s daughter (and, by extension, Jaden’s sister) and Okonedo would play his wife.
