BlasterFaceX-Men: Days of Future Past crushed the box office over the holiday weekend, so far having brought in a worldwide gross of $346 million. There was a lot to like in the latest X-Men outing, which saw returning director Bryan Singer at least somewhat repair the tangled mess the franchise had become in the wake of Brett Ratner’s aggressively terrible X-Men: The Last Stand. But in addition to adapting one of the most beloved X-Men storylines of all time, Days of Future Past promised one thing we here at GFR can never resist: giant freakin’ robots. And now you can see even more of them, thanks to this rather badass concept art for the film.

The bits of Days of Future Past set in the 1970s served up Singer’s take on the traditional “big and purple” Sentinels fans know from the comics, but the apocalyptic segments set in the future revealed the far more dangerous breed, adaptive robots capable of mimicking any mutants power in order to exterminate the mutant race ASAP. Artist Maciej Kuciara, who also worked on this summer’s much-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy, lent his talents to Sentinel design for Days of Future Past, and it’s interesting to see all the variations on the same general theme.

The “scales” looks is prevalent throughout, with the final design being a clear nod to the robots’ origins (and we’ll leave it at that, for those who haven’t seen the movie yet). Within that same general concept, however, you can see Kuciara trying subtle variations for the most part, with this lunk below being by far the most removed from the final design. He looks like he could kill you, but he lacks the streamlined elegance of the movie’s future Sentinels.

You can read commentary and see tons more of Kuciara’s designs on his website, as well as see samples from his other projects. In addition to Days of Future Past and Guardians of the Galaxy, he also worked on the Wachowskis’ upcoming Jupiter Ascending and the video game The Last of Us, among others.
