The World's End Comic Con PosterToday marks the start of the 43rd Annual San Diego Comic-Con International. Pop culture geeks and genre fans from around the world make the pilgrimage to sunny southern California every summer to celebrate the very best of pop culture movies, TV shows, video games, and comic books. This year fans will experience the third and final film in Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto (Blood and Ice Cream) trilogy: the social science fiction film The World’s End. To ramp up the fan experience in San Diego, Universal and Focus Features have released a new Comic-Con exclusive poster created by comic book artist/illustrator Tommy Lee Edwards.

Fans at Comic-Con this year will get a chance to participate in a scavenger hunt leading up to The World’s End’s panel in Hall H on Friday, July 19. Fans will have to scour the Gaslamp District to collect all 12 limited edition trading cards featuring the pubs in the movie’s “Golden Mile” pub-crawl. Once the first 50 people collect all 12 trading cards and follow @TheGoldenMileCC on Twitter, they will get VIP access to the special screening immediately following the panel. For everyone else, the special screening is first come, first served.

The World’s End will be the last appearance for Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg for the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy at Comic-Con. Shaun of the Dead had a huge presence at the annual pop culture convention back in 2004. It was followed up with Hot Fuzz three years later in 2007. The World’s End and its scavenger hunt and pub-crawl are a fitting swan song for the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy.

Unlike a traditional movie trilogy, the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy shares thematic connections rather than narrative ones. Each movie fits into a different genre, but all deal with the similar theme of adults not wanting to grow up. Shaun of the Dead skewers the horror movie, while Hot Fuzz serves the buddy-cop action genre, and The World’s End is a play on the alien-invasion genre. Each movie also has a distinct color scheme (red, blue, and green), which ties to a different flavor of Cornetto brand ice cream (strawberry, vanilla, and mint).

Gary King (Simon Pegg) is a 40-year-old man caught in arrested development. Almost two decades after his childhood friends failed to complete the epic pub-crawl called The Golden Mile, King reassembles the gang to finish what they started 20 years ago. As they drunkenly venture from pub to pub along the mile-long stretch, they soon realize that killer alien robots have invaded the quiet town of Newton Haven. King and his mates must now defend their home town, while at the same time finishing off The Golden Mile at the last pub, called The World’s End.

The World’s End also features actors Martin Freeman, Rosamund Pike, Eddie Marsan, David Bradley, and Paddy Considine.

Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost are expected to participate in The World’s End panel in Hall H this Friday, and the film hits theaters everywhere on August 23.
