With Disney’s imminent release of Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful looming on the horizon, L. Frank Baum’s beloved Oz series is at the forefront of many studio executive’s minds. You know what that means, don’t you? Time to re-imagine the franchise. And that’s exactly what Warner Horizon Television intends to do. The vehicle for this reboot will be a futuristic fantasy series, Red Brick Road.

A couple of different outlets are reporting on the project, the brainchild of comic book and storyboard artist Rob Prior. Variety has the news that Warner scooped up the series, while Heat Vision has additional tidbits and a couple pieces of concept art.

Not much is known at this point, but it is being describe as “a continuation of the Wizard of Oz story but told in a Game of Thrones fashion, filled with politics, intrigue and violence.”

That sounds promising. Red Brick Road will also feature such updates as the Tin Man imagined as a robot, and the red-cloak-wearing Witch Assassin, who you assume is the Dorothy character. Will Toto show up as some sort of big angry wolf? If they’re going to ride on the Game of Thrones train, the idea doesn’t sound too far-fetched. He could be a distant cousin of the Direwolves and chase flying monkeys.

The potential show comes with a collection of big name execs to propel it forward, though there’s no word yet on when they might begin a pilot, or where they might try to shop it. Depending on how big a part the sex and violence play (read: how much they try to make it like Game of Thrones), it’s easy to imagine that Red Brick Road is destined for premium cable. It will be interesting to see if this is set in the future of our world, or in an alternate universe.
