William Goddamn ShatnerTwitter may be further shrinking our already diminutive attention spans, forcing us to think in 140 characters or less, but it does at least give as it takes. Namely by facilitating surreal, random, and occasionally hilarious collisions between celebrities. Case in point, a recent tweet by the one, the only William Shatner, who decided to give Star Trek screenwriter Damon Lindelof a hard time under the guise of wishing him a happy birthday. See, Nimoy gets to pop up in the new Trek timeline, but did anybody invite along the original Kirk? Noooooo…

Lindelof was gracious about the teasing, and genuinely seemed appreciative. Of course, that didn’t stop him from laying a burn on Shatner in the middle of all the heartfelt gooshy stuff.

It was a sweet, good-natured exchange. But then things escalated, because here comes former Trek writer/producer Brannon Braga, one of the guys many fans blame for Trek’s diminishing returns in the years before Abrams rebooted things.

Okay, I have to give the guy credit for being able to laugh at a little self-deprecation. Shatner, however, smelled blood in the water and went for the jugular.

So, what have we learned, kids?

  1. Twitter is fun.
  2. William Shatner is awesome.
  3. For some reason, Alex Kurtzman gets a pass.
  4. That bridge joke still doesn’t make up for Voyager, Braga
