Yesterday, Universal released the first poster to the new sci-fi thriller Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise as Jack Harper. The image of the Empire State Building in this future post-apocalyptic world is quite haunting.

Updated with new trailer embed.

Oblivion is the new sci-fi film from director Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) and producer Peter Chernin (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). Cruise plays Jack Harper, one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. He repairs drones so they can collect resources from the ruined Earth. But when Jack saves the life of a mysterious, beautiful woman, his life turns upside down and he begins to question everything he has ever known. The fate of humanity is placed within his hands.

Maybe it’s the presence of Tom Cruise, but the movie feels like a post-apocalyptic version of Minority Report. It’s as if they’re giving too much away about the film. If you have a keen eye, then you may pick up a few science fiction tropes in the teaser trailer. The film may be set up to go in one direction, but it may take audiences to a different one instead. If you do pick up on the clues, then you won’t be shocked if there is a surprise twist in the movie.

The movie also features Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Zoe Bell, Melissa Leo, and Andrea Riseborough. Oblivion opens this spring on April 12, 2013 in 4K IMAX.
