The Star Wars universe is expanding in ways fans have never experienced before, and the animated Star Wars Rebels has been the first post-Disney buyout addition to the canon (there was that novel, but that doesn’t have nearly the reach of a movie or a show like this). The first season has been a lot of fun, even if it’s aimed at younger audiences. It wraps up this coming Monday, and if you needed a reason to tune in, this new trailer might provide just the push you’re looking for.

While this short video is full of all the high adventure, swashbuckling action, and epic exploits that you’re looking for, it also has a grim edge to it. As you can see, Kanan (voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr.), the leader of the titular band of rebels, is in the clutches of the Empire and being tortured by the Inquisitor (Jason Isaacs). Torture, anguish, and the threat of imminent death aren’t exactly the makings of a happy-go-lucky fun time, and the crew of the Ghost must attempt to rescue him from the evil bastards.

This trailer also leaves out one important piece that we already know shows up in this episode, titled “Fire Across the Galaxy”: Darth Vader. That’s right, James Earl Jones already reprised his legendary role for an extended version of the Rebels pilot, “Spark of Rebellion,” and now he’s back to bookend the inaugural season with another appearance.

The series is set in the time between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, an era where the Empire tightens its oppressive grip on the outer rim planets. In this increasingly dangerous environment, revolution bubbles and you see the first sprouts of what blooms to become the Rebel Alliance of the original trilogy. This setting has also proven to be fun in that it allows for the return of a number of fan favorite characters. Thus far, we’ve already seen Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lando Calrissian, Yoda, and others pop up, and it will be interesting to see what others make cameos as the show moves into the future.

“Fire Across the Galaxy” airs on Disney XD on Monday, March 2.
