Syfy channel’s Defiance should prove to be an interesting endeavor. The cable network is developing the show, while at the same time Trion Worlds is developing a massive multiplayer online shooter game that goes along with the program. This isn’t a simple case of two separate, but related entities. The two worlds will actually interact and intertwine. A short new video boasting the slogan “Watch the show. Play the game. Change the world.” hints at these links.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where seven alien races come to earth looking for a new home after theirs is destroyed, Defiance is a “settler drama” rather than an invasion story. Creators want to stay away from the typical dystopian sci-fi fare, though there is a strict futuristic caste system in place.

Jeb Nolan (Grant Nolan) moves his adopted alien daughter, Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), to St. Louis in order to begin a new chapter of their lives. The city is populated by redneck scavengers and aliens, and includes a mayor played by Julie Benz. Tony Curran and Jamie Murray play a husband-and-wife team of villains that run the criminal side of the town.

While the show takes place in St. Louis the game is set in the ruins of San Francisco. Jeb and Irisa show up in the game but leave early on in order to go to St. Louis, where the show picks up their story. Through your Xbox or PC you can actively participate in the world of Defiance, and the way the world of the game unfolds will impact the future of the television show. That’s the where “Change the world” part comes into play.

Look for Defiance to drop in April 2013.
