With AMC’s The Walking Dead and the upcoming film World War Z, pop culture seems to have zombie fever at the moment. So when a movie takes a fresh approach to the zombie apocalypse, it’s something worth paying attention to. Summit Entertainment has released the first four minutes of the movie Warm Bodies, a movie that attempts to explore the  zombie/comedy territory already covered by movies such as Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, but this time adding in a romantic element…between a living girl and an undead lad . Check it out.

This opening sequence looks great! At first glance, you might think Warm Bodies is the zombie version of the Twilight saga, but it feels like it might be a biting subversion of the monster-romance genre. This first look at the film is really funny and self-aware. We’re getting the point of view of one of the walkers wandering a zombie-infested airport while he tries to remember who he used to be.

The movie Warm Bodies was directed by Jonathan Levine — who also directed The Wackness and 50/50 —  so it feels like it will take a more comedic approach to the material than the comparisons to Twilight might suggest. After the release of the film’s first trailer, it also looks like it’s going to be a much smarter movie than people are willing to give it credit for.

Warm Bodies stars British actor Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as a zombie named R, and Australian actor Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four) as R’s object of affection, Julie. As R falls deeper and deeper for Julie, R becomes more conscious of his former, pre-death self. The film also features actors John Malkovich, Analeigh Tipton, Cory Hardrict, and Rob Corddry.

Warm Bodies opens in theaters on February 1, 2013. Just in time for Valentine’s Day!
