To make up for delaying the series premiere, Fox is giving audiences an extended look at Almost Human. The new science fiction series from J. H. Wyman (Fringe) and J.J. Abrams (Star Trek), features heavy action in a futuristic world where humans and androids work and live together. Earlier this week, Fox released eight minutes of a scene from the futuristic cop drama and now the network released the first three minutes of Almost Human for audiences to check out.

These three minutes are pretty intense. We watch John Kennex (Karl Urban) under fire during a police siege. Director Brad Anderson (The Machinist) uses a very effective first-person-shooter camera technique to ratchet up the action. We watch Kennex go into the firefight to save his partner, despite the recommendation of the on-site synthetic not to. You can see why he hates androids so much, they’re total dicks. During the siege, Kennex loses his partner and his leg, as a mysterious crime syndicate lurks in the shadows. We end with Kennex in rehab for his injuries.

This is a good way to kick off a new TV series. In the first three minutes, we learn about crime in future Los Angeles, why Kennex hates androids, and why he’s going through Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. It’s a tight sequence to start off the sci-fi series.

Recently, Almost Human added actor John Larroquette. He will reportedly play Nigel, a genius roboticist who is described as “sympathetic, highly intelligent and a bit broken.” He joins an already impressive cast of character actors and familiar faces.

A few weeks ago, Fox announced the delay of Almost Human to set it up for a bigger ratings. Originally, the series was going to premiere on November 4th, but the network felt that it should use its NFL Sunday Night Doubleheader to gain a larger audience for the sci-fi cop drama. So now the two-hour series premiere will be split into a two-night event with the first hour airing after Sunday night football on November 17th, while the second hour airs the following evening on November 18th before their new breakthrough hit Sleepy Hollow. Hopefully this new strategy will help make Almost Human a big success.

Set in the year 2048, all police officers are required to partner with androids. Kennex is a tough, respected LAPD police officer who, after a failed police siege that cost the lives of his fellow police officers, is left injured and emotionally distant. Although he hates all synthetics, rules are rules, and he is paired with Dorian, an android with unexpected emotional responses.

Almost Human features Urban, Larroquette, Michael Ealy, Lili Taylor, Mackenzie Crook, Michael Irby, and Minka Kelly. After the two-night premiere, the show will settle into a regular Monday night timeslot.
