The #The1701 was part of a viral marketing campaign for Star Trek Into Darkness. Lucky fans received special limited-edition 3D glasses, stickers, and an invitation to watch the new 3D trailer online before anyone else. The marketing campaign is still going on, but with other social media tools such as Instagram and Vine. Although Star Trek Into Darkness was not shot using 3D cameras, Paramount Pictures decided to up-convert the sequel film. J.J. Abrams has ensured that Star Trek Into Darkness was made with 3D in mind.

Star Trek Into Darkness will find the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise returning to Starfleet Headquarters on Earth, only to discover an unstoppable force of terror attacking from within their ranks. After terrible destruction and chaos, Kirk takes his crew on a manhunt to a planet in a dangerous warzone to capture the one-man weapon of mass destruction known as John Harrison.

Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof wrote the screenplay for Star Trek Into Darkness, while J.J. Abrams directed the movie. The sequel film will also feature actors Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, John Cho, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Peter Weller, Bruce Greenwood as Rear Admiral Christopher Pike.

Star Trek Into Darkness will hit theaters everywhere on May 17th, in 3D and IMAX.
