star warsSince damn near the very second it was announced, there have been rumors, reports, rampant speculation, and various other potential spoilers for the movie we now know as Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Disney, Lucasfilm, director J.J. Abrams, and the cast have been keeping a lid on things (even with the confluence of spy photos that hit the web a while ago), and we won’t know the legitimacy of most of these until the film opens on December 18. But one of the cast members may have inadvertently confirmed one of the biggest and most unexpected of the rumors we’ve heard.

Be warned, there are potential spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens beyond this point.

There are, of course, a number of cast members from the original trilogy returning for The Force Awakens, including the big three of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford. But a few months back, we learned that Warwick Davis, who played the Ewok warrior Wicket in Return of the Jedi, will be back for another adventure. Before that, we also heard rumors that Darth Vader will appear, in some capacity, possibly a flashback that we’ve also heard other rumors about. Again, rumors which are totally unconfirmed and unofficial.

Davis recently appeared on The One Show, and like the other cast members have been, he was tightlipped about sharing any actual details. He did, however, show off two selfies that he supposedly took on set at Pinewood Studios in London. The first shows Davis standing in front of what is obviously Chewbacca. We already know that both the character and actor Peter Mayhew are back, so that isn’t a surprise to anyone. (We’ve heard that Chewie may have a mechanical arm, and did briefly hope that maybe we could see that, but alas, it’s just Wookiee hair.)

star warsThe second picture is the one that is the most interesting. It shows Davis, in a similar pose, standing in front of Darth Vader. And if he indeed took this photo on set, it certainly seems to confirm that Darth Vader is going to appear on the big screen one more time, at least for a few minutes. Maybe this will be in the aforementioned flashback, maybe it will be some other way.

star warsOr at least this looks like Darth Vader. It’s easy to assume that’s who this is, what with the black robes and a lightsaber that definitely looks like Vader’s. It’s also been mentioned that the Sith forces are obsessed with the Dark Lord, to the point where they collect artifacts from his life, so it’s possible one could have come across his lightsaber and rocks that bad boy. They’re also prone to wearing lots of black, so who the hell knows. Like with everything The Force Awakens related, we won’t really know until later this year.

UPDATE:

Okay, that was fun while it lasted. Turns out these photos are not from the set, and that Davis was just having a spot of fun with Star Wars fans. He later sent out this tweet, clarifying the situation:

Both images apparently come from Star Wars weekends, and have nothing to do with The Force Awakens, so we can go back to wondering and speculating.
