Warner Bros. Announces Release Date And Synopsis For All You Need Is Kill Starring Tom Cruise

Getting ready for their slate next spring, Warner Bros. has announced the release date and official synopsis for their new sci-fi thriller All You Need Is Kill, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

Cruise plays Lt. Col. Bill Cage, a soldier in a war against aliens. During battle he gets trapped in a time loop and is doomed to repeat the last day of the fight over and over. As the story progresses, Cage  becomes smarter and more skilled as he’s forced to re-live the horrific battle. The story makes All You Need Is Kill sound like a futuristic Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers, and it’s also reminiscent of a battle-heavy version of Duncan Jones’ Source Code. You can read the official synopsis below:

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.

But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Jumper) will be at the helm of All You Need Is Kill. It has been in development at Warner Bros since 2010, when they announced the project for a 2012 release date. There have been many versions of the script written and re-written by screenwriters Dante Harper, Joby Harold, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci, and Christopher McQuarrie. It was adapted from a Japanese novel by author Hiroshi Sakurazaka. At one point in the film’s development, All You Need Is Kill was being pitched for Brad Pitt as the lead instead of Tom Cruise. Pitt opted to take the starring role in the still-in-the-works film adaptation of Max Brooks’ best-selling novel World War Z instead.

All You Need Is Kill is set to hit theaters on March 14, 2014.
