The Walking Dead’s Rick May Strike Up A Romance With This Character

While there are hints of love and romance now and again on The Walking Dead, AMC’s hit zombie drama is kind of a desolate void in that arena. Aside from Glen (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan), couples never really last. Granted, that’s usually because one party winds up as zombie chow, but still… That, however, may change for a couple of characters coming up.
There are potential spoilers beyond this point, just a head’s up.
While much has been made about Daryl’s (Norman Reedus) romantic life, or lack thereof, and sexuality, not much has been said about the protagonist, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). He may have two kids, be a wee bit mentally unstable, prone to violent outbursts, and occasionally talk to his dead wife, but he’s still one of the most eligible bachelors in the whole zombie apocalypse. And now there are reports going around that Rick might hook up with another member of the group, Michonne (Danai Gurira).
The two have gradually been getting closer over the previous season or so, so it doesn’t seem too far outside the realm of possibility. Talking to Vulture, producer Gale Anne Hurd said, “You’re gonna see something very interesting develop between them. Very interesting, and incredibly unexpected. You’ll see a certain kind of love.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean that the two are going to start knocking boots. Hurd’s statement could mean any number of things, though “unexpected” does call to mind romance. Fans of the comics know that the two develop an incredibly close bond, though nothing romantic has ever really passed between them (Rick is actually with Andrea in the comics, though she’s dead on the show, so that’s not likely going to happen). Michonne and Carl (Chandler Riggs) have also grown a significant connection, and have their own special bond.
We’ll have to wait and see exactly how this plays out, but if the group winds up in a more permanent home, like Alexandria, which many people suspect will happen before long, there is certainly enough space for more romantic storylines to occur.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to sexy romantic times with Rich and Michonne? If they manage to approach it naturally, I have no problem with it, but if they just cram it into the story for the hell of it, that’s where I’m skeptical.
